2016 Kia Optima Navigation SD Card

Hello, my Ozbargain friends.

Finally, I have bought the car that I really loved to have. Yes, it's Kia Optima Gt (2016).

After getting the car I found out that the car doesn't have sd card for the navigation system. The owner has told me he will search and if he can find me one he will let me know as he lost it before.

So I have tried to search and every advertisement I see is mainly from the USA and very expensive.

I would like to know if anyone here knows what should I do? or where to buy one and if I buy one will it work on my Kia or should it need to be a specific one for each car?

I have emailed Kia Australia and asked to help but I couldn't wait longer and decided to ask you guys. :)

Thanks for your information in advance.

Better off using your phone really. Unless the car has its own internet connection like with apple/android car play using the phones net, it won't have traffic info and just sends you the shortest way to the destination.

Really? you mean it's not like the other car (Toyota corolla) or phone GPS?

      • If a system can't connect to the internet, it won't be able to get live traffic or map data so if a road is closed or there's an accident on your route, it will still send you right through it. Given it needs an sd card for its maps, I'd assume this is the case. Check eBay for a nice vent mounted phone holder.

You'll get ripped off but try your local KIA dealership.

    They'll charge you about $300.

In 2017 KIA lost licencing rights to the navigation system they were previously using in their vehicles and stopped providing free map updates.

Tom Tom(?) now supply updates for the 'old' systems to KIA.

Use your phone or even a dedicated GPS with lifetime updates. It'll be cheaper and more up to date.

    • May I ask instead of the navigation and radio, what other function I can have for that screen?

I have a 2017 KIA Sportage SLi. The GPS isn't very good which I expect to be similar to yours, if not the same.

On the basis that your car has android auto/apple car play, I'd suggest using this which connects to your phone's internet. I find that it's better as it gives real time traffic information and much prettier graphics/information than KIA GPS.

You'll need to connect your phone to the car via USB though, it's not a wireless/bluetooth connection option (at least for my current KIA).

    • I still don't know if mine got the android/apple car play or not but it does not look like that.

I have tried to connect my phone using USB cable to the car but I didn't see anything happened, just Samsung DeX has pop up on my phone and I didn't pay attention that much. (Maybe I need to play a bit with the functions and will find something)

      thanks

Has the previous owner really lost the SD card or it's easier saying that than admit the issues with updates and risk you trying for a price discount because of the loss of the function?

You'll still have access to Apple Car Play and Android Auto which gives you a lot to fiddle with.

The Optima GT is a great car, you won't be sorry you've got one.

    • I really have no idea but I think the lack of information from my side caused this happens. :(

You mean the display is Apple Car Play and Android Auto?

Thanks, yes it is a great car :) Full of the button which I haven't even check what is the function of each one.

No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is also perplexing seeing every other Kia, including much cheaper models have it.

    Review

    • I was just checking the same review. Do you mean lower model got it but I the Gt one doesn't? :((

And what is really the use of this big-screen there?

Can I connect my phone to it? and if yes what can I do with my phone, just play music?

You would be better off getting apple carplay or Android auto installed than paying for the SD card. In-car navigation maps get old quickly, updating them is a hassle, and they don't have traffic info. Plus the UI is usually terrible, it is great to be able to use a proper keyboard on your phone or Siri to find a navigation target rather than battle through the in-car navigation system.

Most people take their phone with them everywhere anyway, and it is an easy habit to form to always plug your phone in when you go for a drive.

    • I am really coming up with the same result, that i need to install the apple carplay or Android auto.

May I ask if i need to purchase new panel for it and change the whole display in order to have apple carplay or Android auto?

      or it is something else?

I just looked up to see if I could find any info - it sounds like you might already have it. Have you tried plugging in your phone to see what happens?

Smartphone toting drivers will be happy to learn that the 2016 Optima is will be the first Kia vehicle to feature Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

        • I see this sit and I think it's for USA not for Australia, I am not sure if the system is different in here or not.

I have tried to connect my phone using USB cable to the car but I didn't see anything happened, just Samsung DeX has pop up on my phone and I didn't pay attention that much. (Maybe I need to play a bit with the functions and will find something)

I am at home now after go back home I will check the car and see if i can get something out of this display or not. :)

Rip out the old unit and put in a touchscreen unit from Aliexpress for $200-$300, effectively a full android tablet with better connectivity and screen.
Have had one in my sportage for 4 years now and its been great.

  • There should be two usb ports, one is for charging and the other one (might be in the middle compartment) has data access (if your model has the Android Auto / Apple Car Play). Once connected it would then trigger android auto. Having said this, I don't think 2016 Kia models has Apple Car Play / Android Auto, think they implemented it from the Kia Cerato 2017 onwards.

^ I have a Cerato GT and that is how it works for me - front connection under AC buttons though.

  • 2011 Kia Optima Platinum owner here…. use your phone mate!!!

    • Yeah I think going to do that :)
