Best Dentastix Alternative??

Hi,

Labrador gets a dentastix for breakfast every day, and Id prefer to replace that with a better quality dental treat. Often $12 for 28, so, call it $0.50 each.

Greenies for large dogs can be up to $8 each, and other natural alternatives I can Google tend to be $4 - $10 each.

I love doggo, but dont feel the need to spend 16x more on his breakfast.

I'm seeing a lot of UK and USA alternatives… but no non-biased Aussie sites recommending one for less than, say, $1ish.

Anyone found any? Happy to buy bulk (like, 365 of them) if need be.

If you can stomach having chicken feet in the fridge I would recommend giving that a go, you can usually get them really cheap from Asian butchers. They're good for keeping their teeth clean and are generally less risky in causing obstructions and are also lower in calories in comparison to wings and drumsticks so it wouldn't increase their daily intake too much either.

    disclaimer: not a vet.

I can't cope with chicken feet, mine get bones 3x per week but I'd love a alternative type product.
I was buying dog treats like greenies and dentastixs from a store that sold short dated stock which was much cheaper, but they've closed down
It might be worth looking for stores that have short dated stock.
Otherwise I'm hoping someone else will have some ideas….

  • Found some homemade recipes you could make in bulk and store but no idea how good they are.

  • Bully sticks tend to be like $5 don't they?

My dog gets the runs from big bones —- havent really tried giving him small bones - a chicken drumstick is borderline, in that sometimes his bowel movements are perfect, and sometimes a bit wet. Trying small lamb off-cuts could work, I guess?

Theres a bunch in woolies/coles that are, generally, about $1.20 for large dogs - but none looked "better" than dentastix.

  • What are the woolies/Coles ones? I can't find any but could just be my store

Have you thought of buying dental kibble? Hills and Royal Canin have some. They are larger sized kibbles that are made to abrade the tooth/clean it. They also have something in them to reduce plaque and tartar. They're pricey for a pack, but works out cheap if we give 5-6 at the end of every meal. They seem to work well.

Other brands are Oravet dental chews - cheaper than greenies, and sometimes on sale on Amazon.
