Dealing with a Mechanic that issued a bad RWC

Hi looking for some advice on what to ask for in the following situation.

I brought a car on Gumtree that came with an expired RWC from about 3 months ago, the car had done 400kms since the RWC so i figured it should pass again without too much pain. I was entirely wrong, when i took it to a reliable mechanic for the RWC i was quoted around $1300 with a several of the defects overlapping with the first RWC that were marked as fixed.

I have got in contact with the first mechanic about it and am going to see him Friday, what should i be looking to try and get?

get him to give you another dodgy RWC and treat it as a life lesson….

Or report him, but you're going to have issues proving he was at fault as things happen in 3 months/400KM

  • Yeah one of his famous dodgey roadworthies is definitely sitting as an option.

This can only end very well

Move on and don’t buy another car off gumtree with an expired RWC and expect it to be perfect.

LOL, you trusted the sellers RWC instead of getting your own inspection.

Not so much that, he took a car that didn't have a current RWC.

Rwc is expired, you won't get squat.

what should i be looking to try and get?

A refund of the car, even though he wasn't the one to sell it. Coz you know, ACCC and ACL and all that stuff

    • It's the vibe…

    • Nah… straight to V/QCAT and sue the road worthy guy for the cost of the vehicle…

      • +1

No, sue him for a brand new replacement of the same or later equivalent make and model. To make up for the anguish and distress.

what should i be looking to try and get?

Out of their workshop without receiving a punch in the mouth.

Why do you think the car didn't have a current roadworthy?

What makes you think that your current so called 'reliable' mechanic isn't the one trying to rip you off?

Might've been worth mentioning it was the mechanic that did the recent roadworthy that told me to contact the other shop.

why would anyone sell a car with an expired RWC if it was so easy to get it passed again?

    • Because someone will likely be gullible enough to buy it and you get to save $.

      • if it were easy to get it passed, the seller would just pass it and it would sell for higher $$ and quicker

A expired RWC is no roadworthy at all. I'd say you have little recourse and will only be wasting your own time.

Do you really want to drive an unroadworthy car?

    • +1

For me it would depend on why it failed.

  • several of the defects overlapping with the first RWC that were marked as fixed.

Parts were probably replaced, cleared the RWC conditions and then swapped back.

2 Year update, got a roadworthy off the dodgy guy. Problem free 30000km's and just sold it for %60 initial no roadworthy
10/10 would buy another shitty gumtree car.

    • Sold for 60% of initial purchase cost?

      • Yeah were are talking 3k - 1.8k

  • I’d have no problems with a dodgy rwc aslong I was aware of it being dodgy. Some of the rwc requirements are really stupid. Some of the stupid fails I’ve encountered are: steering wheel cover, worn weather seal on door, wheel specs not visible on wheel.
