Monitor Recommendations for Photo Editing. (Budget $500)

I just purchased a 13.5" Microsoft Surface Book, and am looking at buying a monitor in next month or so.
My primary use of Monitor would be for photo editing with Lightroom, DXO, Topaz Studio etc. And general web browsing.

And of course the extra real estate will come in handy. :)

I do not do gaming at all.

Preferences are for around a 27" screen, budget $500ish.

Do I need a 4k screen?

Hope that's enough info for starters.

  • How colour critical is the work? Because a decent one that's recommended is already over $1k

I find 1440 is usually sufficient, avoiding the added expense of 4K.

  • Not critical, am just a keen snapper who posts pics up on a few forums now and then.

  • Might need to stretch your budget a little https://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-proart-pa32uc-32-4k-hd…

  • Guess I need to update budget, but not to 2k. :(

  • Dell Ultrasharps are good value for money They show up on Dell outlet for under $300 for a 24inch.

Eizos are the bee's knees for image processing.

However if you are not going to invest time in proper colour management, a monitor is not going to make a difference. If you are not going to print at a place does colour manage their printing, it also isnt going to make any difference.

  • +1

Only real requirement is that it must have a IPS panel, 1080p is fine.
4k is cool but pricey, up to you.

    Recommend a dell u2417h

  • Cheers aadvarks.
IPS panel is a must, but 4k isn't critical.
    Will check that Dell out.

  • What type of photos are you editing? And how colour critical is the work?

  • @dust

All types, mainly landscape, street, wildlife and birds.
Prefer a monitor that has up to or close to full gamut of sRGB.
Have looked at a few options now, this one here also sounds ok:

  • I don't know if it still applies, but the Dell I got (years ago) was calibrated out of the box - other monitors you would have to calibrate yourself, so something to look into. Then again, doesn't matter if you don't need colour critical adjustments

  • If you are not fussed about wide color gamut and LG 27" IPS screen with 100% sRGB coverage is good. I have been using such a screen (4k) for about 3-4 years now and it cost about $650 and it works well. Wide color gamut is only useful if you will be printing regularly (or for just the viewing pleasure of a wider gamut). However sticking to sRGB just makes things easier for compatibility across viewing devices.

  • I recently bought Dell U2720Q 4k Monitor for design (web & photo) work to pair with Macbook pro (usb-c thunderbolt).

Some said 4k isn't important but I disagree. Designers need to see native pixels on the screen (it's a minimum requirements for pixel perfect). If you stream 2k resolution from your computer to a 2k 22" screen, ok fair enough, not crisp but get the work done.

But if you want 27" monitor it's better to go with 4k for that crisp "retina-like" ratio.

Second thing to consider is colours, this sually the first, but budget is limited you have to choose size over colours. sRGB usually do the job quite well on most monitors, get a calibrator and you are not too far off. Wait until you are Pro with photo editing then go with better monitors.
