ACL Reasonable Duration for iPhone SE

I bought an iPhone SE at $449 about 3 years ago May 2017. It stopped working completely and Apple said it needs to be replaced at cost of around $350. Is it reasonable of me to think ACL would cover it, given its almost 1 year above the 2 year warranty?

Bought from JB HiFI.

  • Depends on why it stopped working really.

    • No user damage - Apple confirmed its a failed motherboard

I would get them to put that in email and then push ACL because it should definitely last longer.

A 2 year warranty for a low end smartphone is reasonable. 3 years would be acceptable for a flagship.

    • Hmm per Choice, they say high end smartphones should be 6 years, while low end should be around 3 years. Guess it really is a matter of interpretation.

      • Yea it depends how things are viewed individually. If it worked fine for 3 years solid, is it really a manufacturing defect if it then goes broke?

        Choice

Choice sells magazines. They'll publish anything as long as people buy it.

      • LOL battery that lasts 3yrs…. Yea it all depends on what you define as working….. even if it is on its last legs :)

      • Should ?!!!

  • Honestly, you're still within reason to fight this. Considering contracts are now 36 years, you can argue they should last that long.

Wait you have a phone which is 36 years old and still claiming warranty on it?

      • Sure am…..

Call apple care and push back on them. Be firm but polite, quote the consumer laws and ask for a senior advisor to review your case.

  • Matter of interpretation and how far you are willing to take it. If you take it to Small Claims Court you will likely win, because it will be a no show from Apple (or from any other organisation you are dealing with).

But obviously you need to weigh up the time spent fighting it and then going to court etc. Is it worth taking off all that time to fight it?

    • OP isn't going to court for $50.

      • You never know. Some people fight over things like this due to principle.

I remember reading a news artcle about a man who went to court over a laptop and was in court for years and racked up a hefty fee which he had to pay off. All in the name of 'principle'.

It’s got 1 year warranty. I wouldn’t expect more that 3 years for a $450 device. Apple on their website states they will remedy claims under ACL for 24 months, if you believe the device should last longer, since it’s more than 24 months, you have to take it up with retailer, in this case JB.

You’re in a bit of a “line ball” situation.

3 years ACL warranty for a flagship device? No problem at all.
3 years ACL warranty for a device 1/3rd of the flagship price? Difficult to argue, but not impossible.

I’ve known customers who have had their SE fixed beyond 2 years, but that was only a couple months past the 24 month mark.

I’d say it’s worth trying to get it fixed by standing your ground, but be prepared to walk away as a refusal to repair wouldn’t be completely unreasonable.
