Gaming PC Build - Parts Advice Needed!

Hi OzBargainers!

I am looking for parts advise for a Gaming PC build for my teenage son. Budget is approximately $1k (willing to pay a little more for quality components). I thought the EOFY sales may offer some bargains.

Research seems to dictate that a Ryzen 5 2600, coupled with a b450 Motherboard, RX570 GPU, 16GB ddr4 3200mhz and 480gb ssd is a good start.

Exact brands and links would be appreciated for a parts list (so much to choose from and I have very little experience). Umart is within my vicinity and would be handy for parts collection. However, open to all options and advice.

Warm regards,

CR

  • Your choice has a weak GPU.

Have a look here for starting point.

Do you already have OS? monitor? keyboard / mouse?

Don't bother with amd gpu. You'll be plagued with driver issues. Most of my friends who bought into amd gpus have regretted it. Go for nvidia. Amd ryzen cpus are fine

    • What year is it? Have we gone back in time? This has to be a joke, right?

      • I'm not going to argue on this one. Read any forum on guru3d. Besides you also read about the issue with the fans on amd gpus. They were not secured enough on the cards which means they run hot unless you tighten the fans.

      • Simplexion, could you recommend an alternative GPU?

  • Thanks, oscargamer. The GPU was my main concern. You recommend the Radeon RX 580 8GB?

I have all peripherals except the OS. Suggestions? I heard you can get a free watermarked version on Windows 10. True?

    • You can get Windows 10 free if you already have an existing PC/laptop running Windows. Can copy and install through USB

      • Thanks, Yeemail!

    • I recommend Nvidia.

Always had issues with AMD GPU's

        Oh look, another one.

  • Thanks Raj09. Do you have a specific GPU you could recommend?

    • A 1660 will be the best 😊

  • You're better off buying a well looked after 2nd hand PC for $1000.

Get more value for money that way.
    .

  • Thank, Jugganautx. Will consider.

  • Consider the Ryzen 3300x over the 2600. It's about the same price but has higher performance for gaming.

    • Interesting. Thanks, Hellfire.

      • Seems like the 3300x is sold out everywhere.

  • +3

    The sweet-spot for a $1000 build would be a Ryzen 3300X + 1660 Super.

Something like this would work out pretty well:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3300X - https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/amd-ryzen-3-3300x-4.3… - $199
    GPU: Galax GeForce GTX 1660 Super - https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/galax-geforce-gtx-166… - $349
    RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200 (any goes) - https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/g.skill-ripjaws-v-16g… - $99
    MOBO: AsRock B450M Pro4-F - https://cplonline.com.au/asrock-b450m-pro4-f-am4-micro-atx-m… - $139
    PSU: Corsair CV450 (or similar) - https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Power-Supplies/ATX/81209… - $79
    SSD: 500GB (anything goes) - e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/548181 - $78
Case: whatever goes with the remaining $60 or so.

If you can find a 3600 for around $265 (which it seemed to be at a few weeks ago), then I would go with that over the 3300X. At $299, it might be worth it if you do other things, but not for gaming with a 1660S.

  • Thanks, Hellfire. Will look into it.

  • p1 ama, Thank-you so much for your time. I really appreciate your listing and feedback. Much appreciated.

  • Can somebody also give me some advice about cooling requirements? Do I need to purchase extra fans for example? Thanks.

    • You won't need any unless overclocking. Cases often come with some built in.

      • Thanks, Hellfire.

    • The included cooler will be fine for a Ryzen 3 or 5 CPU. If it's too loud, I'd get something like this: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/33459/cryorig-m9i-cpu-co… for $40. It'll be much quieter, but the performance will largely be similar.

      • Got it. Thanks, p1 ama.

  • +1 for a 1660 over similar AMD. Of course AMD are fine usually with drivers but they do have more issues than NVIDIA.
