Telstra ADSL Mobile Mode Speed Faster than Landline

I have ADSL Broadband with a Telstra smart modem Gen 2. We get speeds of about 3 to 5 mbps. When the landline goes down we get up to 15 mbps because of sim back up.
Are there any plans we can get using the inbuilt sim to have a better speed constantly?

Don’t know how these work but can’t you technically pull the cord out so it is permanently on Mobile Mode?

      Not recommended.
Telstra limits your connection (or disables it) after x amount of GB used whilst in mobile mode.

Nope. Sim is used as a backup connection only. You will get warned if you are constantly using it and there aren't any outages/faults. (Of course you can use it if your ADSL goes down)

Sim is also tied to that gen 2 and it is locked to Telstra. You can root it (not recommended) and use any sim in it on any network. Somewhere on the Whirlpool forums, there is a guide.

Sim backup is speed capped at 6Mb, and if you use it for extended periods, you’ll receive sms warnings and your service will be disconnected

It has actually sped up for me - when my Telstra cable goes down the 4G Speeds are 23 down and 1 up.
Other whirlpool users have also reported the same results

Have you actually received the sms? Or is it your understanding that a warning is supposed to be sent? Coz the 2 are very different.

    • We found that the speed jumps to 20 mbs when landline is down.

its embarrassing that there is any need and so much advertising in metro areas for these "smart modems" to pick up the slack from our brand new NBN

but im sure there are plenty of people who would still miss the glaring irony and defend the lib rollout while purchasing one of these turd-polishers

Especially on OzB - it's crazy

I found the opposite happened with the Gen2 on NBN HFC50. The modem had an issue where it wouldn't connect to the cable network so was on the SIM backup. I was lucky to get 2Mb download and 0.2-0.3 upload. You must be nearer to a Telstra tower.

  • Obviously the slow 3mbs speed can be fixed by allowing connection to the tower via the sim backup. However Telstra prefers you to pay for a inferior service.
