Storing Unopened Furniture in Garage

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but, I am planning on buying some sofas before the EOFY sale ends but I dont actually need them till about December.

I was planning to store it unopened in its original box until the end of the year for when I move to a new house. Is there something that I need to worry about in terms of storage?

While I am posting, any suggestions on decent furniture stores thats good quality but I wont have to sell my kidney to pay for it?

PS. I also realise that I could buy it for when black friday/boxing day sales come around.

TIA.

  • Do you mean anything worry that would degrade the furniture?
Unless you have flooding problems or termites i think it should be fine

Probably need to consider moths and mould too.

Flat packed furniture probably has silica packets to capture the moisture and a plastic cover should keep the moths out, but something to consider anyway.

Just keep your IKEA packages flat. Also buy with your membership to get 365 day returns.

I'd be worried that when you finally open it and start using it that something is wrong and you need to return it. Would be a bit hard after 6 months.

    • Yeah this.

I had ikea furniture come and it wasn’t until I was in the last like 3 steps of putting it together did I notice there was an issue with one of the items. There was no issue in them swapping it over, but I’d never get away with this 6 months down the line.

It’s not something I would have picked up on until actually putting it together either.

      • Ikea have excellent customer service though. You can return it for up to a year just because you changed your mind apparently. Haven't read the T&C so it might only be for store credit etc but you're not going to find that offer elsewhere. Same issue with a smaller store and you'd probably lose out.

        • No worries about returning things with Ikea. I ordered a new kitchen including a fridge, didn't get around to unpacking the fridge for nearly 6 months. When I did, I realised it has obviously been dropped and had a huge dent in the side. Rang Ikea (on a Sunday night) and they came and swapped it the following morning. No questions.

        • Ikea have excellent customer service though.

Do they? They tend to be pretty pedantic about proof of purchase for warranty claims, even though they can obviously see the item "ikea". It's become a bit easier with the family membership and looking up previous purchases, but who honestly keeps a receipt for a 5 year old bed that was old with a lifetime warranty?

    • Ah! that's a very good point!

Unless it is floor stock (which is unlikely to come packed in a box) it might very well be December by the time you have your furniture delivered as most sofas are made overseas with a lead time of 10-14 weeks.

The above does not apply to Ikea though. Pretty much every other sofa would come wrapped in plastic and foam but it would be extremely rare that your sofa would be in a box.

    • This is very true. We bought a sofa from king living at end of Feb. It is only now ready to pick up.

As long as sunlight doesn't come in.. My mum made me store a Freedom bed on a verandah wrapped, the wrapping was clear and had the Freedom logo all over it, so the colour faded everything but the freedom logo. Brothers teased me for a while.

Edit: Boxed should be okay apart from getting water damaged?

  • If its leather it might sweat if wrapped in plastic. Or atleast thats what a guy once told me at a storage facility.

  • It depends where your garage is and how dry it is.

My friends stored their bed, dining table and half their lounge in my storage cage which has a concrete floor, well ventilated but below street level.

They wrapped the items poorly and didn't put them on dunnage to keep them off the concrete. 2 years later (it was supposed to be 6 months) and they are stuffed.

I'm sure your items will be fine but don't have them sitting directly on the concrete.

    • +1 on that one. We put some stuff in storage and they gave us pallets to sit it on to avoid this happening. I had a friend who had a whole bunch of books ruined when they were stored in a back shed in cardboard boxes, the damp come up through the concrete floor. I would also be concerned about sweating in the plastic; if ventilation is an issue in the area. However, I suspect the furniture sits in boxes, in their warehouse, for a fair amount of time.

  • Thank you guys, from the comments it seems like storage isnt going to be an issue.

But as pointed out, if you find somethings broken after you open it in in 6 months, it'll be difficult to get a refund.

I am looking to buy from focus on furniture and their website doesnt clearly state how far along you can return. Another option I suppose is to get a raincheck on it. Not even sure if thats a thing for furniture.

    • Ask if you can buy now for delivery at end of the year. You can secure pricing now and get your order in. Just hope they don't go out of business.

  • I want to know if the furniture EOFY sales are legit or just like beds where every 2 weeks its a 'sale'. Thanks as i'm thinking of grabbing one this weekend.

  • Mould maybe

  • I would just wait. First of all, furniture goes on sale every second week. Second of all, moving furniture is a bitch and I’d rather do it once than multiple times

  • Just buy them closer to December. The ‘biggest sale ever’ occurs pretty much every month and runs for 3 weeks - andif it’s not I sale you should be able to bargain down to ‘sale’ prices anyway.
