How to Combat Itchy Skin

It's getting pretty dry these day and my skin is very itchy specially at night. This interrupted my sleep a lot, i wake up almost every 2 hours because of itchiness.

I have used Redwin body lotion (because its cheap) previously and it didn't help much.I thought maybe a more expensive body lotion will help, so i got the Aveeno body lotion but the lotion makes my skins very sticky and it didn't do much either.

I'm currently looking at buying QV (but there are too many types, i got confused) or Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Deep Moisture Body lotion. Can any OZB provide some guidance here on which body lotion you are using and how it feels on your skin? Or is there any medication/supplement that will help?

*edit:
Thank you everyone for your reply to this thread and to who private messaged me.

As requested, i like to provide more information/context to my condition. I don't have asthma (not that i'm aware of), only severe eczema on my right hand since a year ago (probably got it from working as a cleaner back then). I went to see a GP about it. The D prescribed me Elocon cream, and ask me to use hand cream often and keep my hands clean and dry. I did all that, but till today the eczema still flare up from time to time. I have tried many creams, but there is no cure to eczema as far as i know.

As for my overall body skin condition, they are not always great, from time to time i will get itchy here and there but nothing serious. Some over-the-counter steroid cream and lotion will fix it right up. But just that this time those did not work.

Since yesterday after receiving ozbs advise i had tried the following:
1. Deep clean of my bedroom, everything include fans, AC, floors, wardrobe, windows.
2. Wash all my pyjamas and bed sheet with Cold Power Sensitive Pure Clewan Laundry Powder. (i wash my bed sheet every 2 weeks anyway)
3. Took a warm-ish bath before bed with Aveeno body wash and applied QV cream straight away.
4. Turn on air-humidifier and air-purifier to max all night long with the fan on low.
5. For diet i stopped eating eggs, milk, and my usual protein powder since last night.

I was able to get some more sleep last night but i still woke up by little itchiness. I reapplied some more cream and top with Vaporub to stop the itch. Yes its improved, but not 100%. I will try a few more things tonight.

update 2*
i got better after using Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Deep Moisture Body lotion that i bought from CWH during half price promotion.
and still doing everything stated above, except i'm back on eggs and protein powder cause i need the gainz.
Once again, thank-you all for your reply. Appreciated.
personally i recommend to not waste your money on Aveeno body lotion. Too sticky, wont stop the itch.

How the hell has there been 50+ comments and only ONE recommends seeing a medical professional?

Go to the GP, get a referral to a dermatologist. Dermatologist will likely diagnose on the spot or take a scraping to be analysed, and will prescribe the correct treatment.

    OzBargain isn't a doctor…

    • Not every one want to see the Doc unless they can solve by them own, this is why it called a forum and yes if the problems persist then you need to see the D :)

      • OP is literally asking because his problems have persisted.

        • And they need to go back to the doctor. Illness exists across a spectrum with time.

    • Multiple posts before this one suggested seeing a GP.

    • I'd assume the doctor was the first place asked.
The answer from doctors is usually steroid cremes, which if you've tried it (profanity) you up in other ways.

The fact is doctors don't know how to solve skin issues for everyone… if they did there wouldn't be a huge industry around skin issues.

      • I'm sure it happens, but I think topical steroidal creams are usually not associated with side effects?

Tablets - yes, but creams? (I'm not a doctor obvs)

    Fish oil tablets

    • Actually evening primrose oil is better for the skin, or you could take both

    • wow peeps are downvoting anything these days.
NGL cleared up my skin but hey people seem to be offended but suggestions that work.

      • +1

I upvoted your suggestion. Fish oil omega 3 supplements are good for reducing skin inflammation.

  • a few thoughts - what part of your skin is dry and itchy ?

is it from showering - too long, too much soap, too hot water ? In which case you could try/test - shorter/cooler showers without soap, just soap the hairy bits armpits and groin - and see how you feel after that

a girlfriend had itchy skin - I noticed white stuff on her skin - she hadn't rinsed off the soap, which would dry on and irritate her skin ! So make sure you rinse off any soap completely.

if still dry - are you eating enough oily fish/almonds/olive oil - I love the odd roast pork belly - greasy as but moah delicious !

if still dry - I read the cheapest best value skin care was sorbolene - not sure if that's the Redwin you've got - https://www.priceline.com.au/redwin-sorbolene-moisturiser-wi…

if still dry - is your skin allergic to something you're wearing/sitting on/or in the air - it's allergy season - mostly grass pollens, I'm allergic to cat dander, dust, contact with some plastics, are you sitting on fake leather (plastic) upholstery ?

so - many things to check - do one by one - to find the cause …

Give QV Cream a try. Tried and proven to work on elderlies at my wife’s workplace and kids in our home.

Cetaphil Pro Eczema after shower and well dried.

    • No I have not.

        You mite want to.

Try starting to take multivitamins, your body might be lacking in some which causes this autoimmune issue. Like some others have said vitamin D usually seems to be the main culprit, especially worse during winter.

  • Are you overweight? Poor health? Eat lots of junk food?

Get a blood test :) reveals alot

  • Have you tried baby products like johnson&johnson soap, crush powder or bepanthen cream for itchy spots

Obviously talk to your doc about the eczema but for itchiness have you tried aloe Vera gel?

Something like this? Normally this helps soothe red spots.b

    • Yes, I'm using Thursday plantation aloe Vera gel

Sorry for the late response, and it seems you’ve been given some good ideas, but I’ll list my suggestions,

Soap - try a few days washing your body with just water, if improvement then experiment with dermatological body wash (Supermarket sells a few, otherwise pharmacy)
Shampoo - baby shampoo is less drying
Washing - wash bedding and clothes with a sensitive product
Moisturiser - apply after washing, esp. after every shower. I like Aveeno daily sheer hydration & Vaseline intensive care aloe soothe, but see what works
Clothes - try different material, 100% cotton or linen, or something different to normal
Anti-histamine- I like Telfast, but different products suit different people

    Good luck

  • Are you in Victoria? My mum goes to this place that has this cream and is very good.

'NS-21 skin repair treatment' worked for me.

  • Are you a vegan/vegetarian?

    • Yes

Like clockwork. A lot of vegetarians (especially vegans!) complain about skin problems they never had before…
You are not "detoxing", you are starving yourself of precious nutrtients.
I reckon if you eat some beef for a week, all your problems will go away.

A true gentleman carries a shield.

  • Have you tried using fresh aloe vera from the garden?

  • I swear by the Bush Essentials salt scrub. It has a lot of essential oils and I love the smell. My skin goes super dry and itchy in winter. Using this scrub once every weekend and i dont even use any body lotions. It is the absolute best. Have had it atleast 10+ years.

A lot of people suggesting QV cream, which I do like. I found if you are getting REALLY dry cracked skin give the Palmers Cocoa Butter lotion a go, it's unfortunately a little more on the greasy side but but very long lasting

I used to suffer from dry skin, cracks in the skin, eczema, had patches every where it was horrible. It has been a long time now.

    Shower using
    Sorbolene Bars
    Like
    https://shop.coles.com.au/a/alexandria/product/velvet-sorbol… (I like this brand)

    Moisturise with
https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/779405/aus… costs a little more but is great.
After it absorbs it does not feel greasy, I don't like the Redkin sorbolene, it feels greasy to put on.

Worse thing about sorbolene is finger prints! I hate fingerprints on my stuff, my glasses, etc.

I have a bit of OCD with washing my hands too which does not help.

You should go to GP :)

My doctor prescribe me the following:
Novasone cream to reduce the redness. It’s superb effective for me.
Telfast if it’s too itchy and I can’t sleep.

It’s also good to have allergy test as suggested by others. It might be food allergies or ‘tint’/makeup products that triggers the allergies.

  • Cold shower and ACV

    Maybe see a dermatologist

  • Protein powder is a trigger. Could be a gut issue? The only brand I can reliably digest is $45 a kg… Other than that seeing a specialist can help as paying $10 each time for topicals can add up over time.

    • last I looked protein powder was mostly whey - skim milk

when I have much of that I get constipation - so guess that dries me up …

  • I have the same problem and this works for me. Try Dermaveen Moisturising Lotion sold at chemist warehouse or woolworths and take antihistamines that contain Cetirizine either from Zyrtec or Coles brand and stops itchiness within 20 mins

Hi there, I also suffer from Eczema so know how it feels. Are you stressed at all? I find that this is one of the biggest triggers for. Also the doctor recommended eating more vegetables and cutting out the protein like others have mentioned, having warm to cool showers and not using anything but water to wash in, he was saying that even all these 'so called' specialist washes might help initially but if you use them daily your body gets used to it and they become ineffective. You can get some cream over the counter called Dermaid (comes in 0.5% and 1.0% hydrocortisone) which I find helps but again its a case of using only when needed, otherwise the body gets used to it and it starts to do nothing. Like others have mentioned too, cotton sheets and clothes over man-made fibres. Keep hydrated as well and if you go out in the cold, don't put yourself straight in front of a heater, you have to warm yourself up gradually. Hope it gets better for you 😊

    • THIS. Came here to mention stress/anxiety.

  • See a dermatologist.
I have psoriasis for more than 10 years and until recently I've decided to go see a dermatologist.
It may not be as expensive as you think.
For me, I got to do the UV treatment, 3 times a week, 8 weeks to start with. Also got some creams. You only need to pay for the creams and the consultation. It has improved quite a bit.

Carnivore diet fixed my dermatitis up.. Cutting out dairy was the big one.

  • I take an Anti-histamine when my skin starts getting itchy n that helps

  • Your skins protective layer is most likely weakened, so you'll need moisturisers that'll help and protect that layer.
E45 Dermatological Cream works really well on dry itchy spots. Imo its not super sticky for how creamy it is, but it leaves a nice layer. Vaseline for small itchy dry spots may help too.

natural and cheap - coconut oil

  • -2

Burn the skin off with acid.

  • Coconut oil works very well for some people I know!

    • Cheap compared to moisturisers
    • Natural
    • Versatile
    • Antimicrobial / Antibacterial
  • I have it on my left shin

Given all sorts of steroidal cream, don't go in this direction it (profanity) up your body, thins the skin.

I've found Neutrogena Q10 to be the most consistent and long term results

This is the only product that works for my seborrheic dermatitis not sure if it will work for your condition but it effectively kills the excess yeast on my skin that causes the irritation and itchyness I use it every day on my scalp and face.

I have really bad dry skin and often dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. You must see a GP and get a referral to a dermatologist.

I use Dermaveen shower and bath oil - no soap products at all. Dermeze ointment is excellent if very dry skin. I also use Cetaphil face products. Omo sensitive for washing clothes works for me - can't stand highly scented products

Had eczema all my life, about 18 months ago I started taking kefir daily and after about a month I noticed a huge difference to my skin. I haven’t had an outbreak except recently on my hand which I believe is from the excessive use of hand sanitizer.
Get the natural kefir which you grow daily (saves $$), taste a bit like natural yogurt (I hate the sour taste but I’ve finally got use to it, beats getting eczema). I also use QV replenishes dry skin cream as my daily body cream.
There’s so many remedies out there and I’ve tried a lot of different creams (prescribed and off the shelf). This one worked for me but everyone is different and I think it’s a bit of trial and error.

I also don’t have hot showers as my skin gets red and sensitive and end it with a 10sec cold blast.

  • +1

Are you stressed? Is it a histamine reaction? I've read through and would recommend you get tested for allergies, but also reflect on the level of stress in your life and if that's changed.

For me, higher stress results in an absolute amplification of any underlying allergies (for me, its both types of dustmite, and cats). But I also find my tolerance for dairy and alcohol is impacted.

  • Are you living in an old house with old carpet? Have you had a chance to travel and found you are not itchy while you are in hotel? If yes then it is probably dust in the house.

  • especially at night? I am wondering if it is something related to the bed?

  • I have used cetaphil moisturising cream to combat my dry skin (face and body) and its been the best for me. Tried everything else and it wasn't good. I like the non-greasy and fragrance free part of it too.

My wife have the same issue and I am scratching her toes as I am typing this. The doctor say is not so much dryness, is actually frost bite, meaning it’s too cold. Solution : use hot / warm foot bath before bed and wear more layers of socks during the day especially at night.

    Hopes this help !

  • Bathe using products without SLS.

Bathe in cold, if not, colder water. Warm or hot water dries out your skin.

    Use unscented sorbolene cream.

    See a dermatologist.

Tried messaging OP but not sure if it went through. Try Nizoral 2% (the red one) apply on skin and leave for 5 mins, then wash off. You could have a yeast imbalance in your skin. This was the case for my Mrs. Red itchy welts and blotches on her skin for years until we came across this and it worked.

  • ive been getting itchy aswell as temps have been dropping. aloe vera cream after a shower has pretty much stopped it for me.

  • +1

    I had your condition.

Visited a specialist they gave me pimecrolimus eczidel 1% for 5days a week and 2days triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% it has fixed it all.

  • Avoid shellfish, alcohol, fatty fried foods from your diet. I find that these foods tend to trigger skin inflammation and cause itching. Drink plenty of water.

  • Are you eating or drinking fermented foods?

They can be beneficial too some people but they can also cause irritation to others.

  • Your update appears to indicate you made numerous changes in one go, thus not knowing whether one factor contributed most to improvement of symptoms. Could I suggest you gradually reverse the changes to see whether there is one particular trigger. If you find one particularly affects you it might give you more hints as to what to look at eg. further change to diet

You could also be wasting time/money on ineffective strategies by not knowing which one is effective

  • If this is a recent thing, have you had some significant stress lately?

  • In some cases, itchy skin can be a result of different medical causes. If you continue to have itchy skin you should visit your GP
