Best Phone for Wide Angle Videography at a Low Price in June 2020?

Hi Ozbargainers,
Looking out for a new phone as my current Pixel 2 will soon be out of service life, and I need one good wide-angle camera for my new work. So why not combine?
As I always prefer to have a lightweight setup, so a good phone and a gimbal (already had) should be plenty enough.
Problem is, I don't have much fund now. So I'm looking to my fellow Ozbargainers for help. Obviously, if possible I would get something like a Sony Xperia 1 II for myself =)))
Another option would be a good wide-angle lense add-on for phone. Though I have a cheap one, and the quality at the corner is absolutely the worst.
Thanks heap in advance!

May be a Galaxy s10e, I think Sony Xperia 1 II is really good but its more expensive and you will have yo import it. AFAIK Sony doesn’t sell mobile phones in Australia anymore.

    • Hm, you have any idea how often are they updating Android on that phone?

      • +1

Pretty good. Samsung has upped their game in that department.

Sony phones are overrated tbh. I am looking forward to seeing how the mark 2 is though

  • Tbh I thought about lg v60 first, but couldn't find any sale anywhere, and the update seems to be terrible.

    I think you got confused.
If you want something for your work, you want a DSLR/Mirrorless.

    …unless…don't say it… you're a Realtor >(

    • Haha sorry but you guessed it right :)) that's why I don't need a DSLR/mirrorless. Simply overkill $_$

Jokes aside, I simply want a better option for travel as well, since I love the perspective of the wide angle, but don't really like the almost-fish-eye view of Go Pro. And nothing beats the convenience of a phone camera :D

I wouldn't rule it out. Most of these action cameras have fish-eye correction built-in as an option and if you're truly stuck, there's even online page which can process an uploaded image (https://jywarren.github.io/fisheyegl/example/).

I would suggest taking a look at the cheaper Go-Pro alternatives from Xiaomi, Thieye, etc. You can get a decent clone for $150ish.

        • That's a nice suggestion. As I said above, phone camera is still preferred. Have you tried those fish-eye correction before? My friend lent me a Go Pro some time ago, but I don't remember having a good impression with that option.

@Ted Kul: I actually LOATHE the Wide-Angle shots in Real Estate Ads. It gives a false sense of space, in pretty much, every room/photo. But if you must have the best wide-angle camera-phone; it's on the OnePlus 8 Pro.
I'll list the specs, and here's an article!

            Hardware:
(Great - Sensor) = 1/2.0 inch sized, Sony Exmor IMX 586 sensor
            (Great - Total Pixels) = 48MP 0.8µm pixels, albeit QuadBayer = half-detail
            (Great - Standard Pixels) = 12MP 1.6µm pixels, after conversion = full-detail
(Average - Aperture): f=1/2.2 (supposedly 13mm, but closer to 16mm equivalent)
(Good - Field of View) = 119.7 degrees
            (Good - Focus) = Uses Phase-Detection Autofocus
(Average - Stabilisation) = lacks OIS, but has a more advanced EIS

(Good - Video) = Only one mode available to get Ultra-wide on videos (ie using this lens+sensor) and that's only on the SuperSteady Mode. Basically EIS. It does a good job at 4K/30fps. Most competitors perform average, or even poor, on the ultra-wide sensor… that's if they even give you the option in the first place.

            Software:
(Average - Lens Correction) = Fish-eye distortion corrector, doesn't work too well
(Great - Night) = NightScape mode supported on the ultra-wide sensor
(Average - Stock Camera App) = Oppo's algorithm is almost equal to Sony, Huawei, and LG. They have a ways to go, and improve, but it's not bad. Definitely the Software Image Processing Techniques are behind Samsung, Google, and the current class-leader Apple.
(Great - Supports Gcam Mod) = Google's Pixel Camera Algorithm running on the Qualcomm DSP (Hexagon 698) that's included with Snapdragon 865 SoC (won't work with Exynos, Kirin, or MediaTek SoC's).

Why did I conclude the OnePlus 8 Pro has the best ultra-wide camera?
Well, we see the iPhone 11 Max compete well, and the Samsung S20+ give it a run for its money. However, the OnePlus definitely has the better HARDWARE than those options. It's software can get better with updates which are kinda frequent. Or you may be able to import the SIP from a competitor like the Gcam Mod.

PS: This took me just over one solid hour of searching, reading and comparing phone cameras :'(

            • @Kangal: So grateful for your deep insights here mate!
I understand your loathe for those photos on real estate website, I must admit it is a bit misleading when we use those viewpoints since normal people don't have those kind of eyesights, except experienced ones who can distinguish them. But it's just kinda convenient and make better frames for room insides, otherwise those videos would be a bit dizzying to follow.
Back to our matter, your suggestion seems like a genuinely interesting option. My friend use One Plus 5, and to this date it is still a very good phone for him. So I would consider this dearly.
As much hating China as me (no racism here, talking about the government), I can't afford myself to totally avoid Chinese brand, so I would look around into these options and decide for myself.

Only a few days until EOFY, and still no really good deals pop up around :((
Add to that unable to travel overseas, thus no claim TRS either :((

Have you considered why not buy a wide angle lens attachment from Moment etc? It could be a cheaper investment that way although I understand to just have the convenience of an in-built wide lens with a phone. I'm rocking a LG G8S and LG was the first manufacture to bring wide angle lens back in the G6 (the biggest selling point for me when I bought it). It does okay @ $499 from JB Hifi.
I use a Freewell wide lens on my Osmo Pocket and it's a lightweight video power house! Costs less than a staple mid-range phone all up. Just some more ideas.

You could claim a portion of the phone use attributed to your realtor job as a tax deduction, if you can prove that is what it is used for.

    • Moment is a bit expensive since you have to buy both lense and case from them? I tried to look up good options like Aukey Ora (out of stock) or Xenvo Pro (cost like $130 in Australia), all the others look the same like my useless lense I have (low quality, not enough view, heavy blur/vignette at the edge) so no luck.
Do you have any suggestions regarding this?

I ordered this last week: Black Eye lens G4 Wide (160deg) ~$70 for my Pixel 3aXL

        AU shop:
        https://blackeyelens.com/product/wide-g4/

At least this is not a noname one like those on Ebay.

I will report back when I got it.

        • +1

          Got it:)

          It is good.

https://imgur.com/a/egim1KW The photo with no extra lens is quite poor as well..sorry

NOTE: It clips on the phone. I have 1x camera phone and this clips around that 1mm high phone lens. There is no movement, perfectly centered.

However, I have a good silicon Case so with that the lens will just sit on top of the silicon case adding +1mm distance between them.

          • @kator: That's promising!
But I can't see your photo in the link tho.

  • Realme 6 has wide angle videography and is a great phone all round. Cost me $410 from jb hifi
