Second Opinion on This Dell Gaming Laptop

I'm looking at this laptop: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Dell-G5-15-5500-Gaming-Lapto… and it seems like a very amazing price if combined with the 20% discount since it changes it from 3k to 2.4k price point, but is this a good value at this price point compared to other gaming laptops?

Another one I've been noticing is this laptop as well https://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-tuf-gaming-a15-156-144… which has a really good CPU at 2.3k price point, although maybe this could be even better with EOFY sale?

My use case would be for gaming, ranging from Minecraft (with lots of mods) to Doom Eternal, but nothing battle royale, what do you think would be the better choice? Or maybe even recommend another laptop?

  • Actually, another thing I'm considering is the possibility of hooking this up to two monitors. I'm starting to be a bit unsure if the ASUS can do this… Both of my monitors are displayport monitors (although one can do HDMI at least)

The Asus can do this, I have one and it’s great. The HDMI port is connected directly to the RTX2060 and so is the USB-C port, which is DisplayPort capable, so you can run gsync/freesync using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

Choosing one depends what you want to use this for. The rtx2070 in the dell is a max-q version (lower tdp) which will marginally outperform the full power rtx2060 in the Asus. The dell will have better battery life and the Asus will have more storage options with 2 x m2 bays and a 2.5” HDD bay.

I like the Asus as it has 144hz and adaptive sync, where the dell is only 144hz. I used mine for gaming, running cad programs and virtual machines - the 8 core amd is perfect for that.

The Asus has a longer warranty (2yrs) vs the 1 yr of the dell. The Asus will be marginally louder under full load, though neither will be quiet in this scenario. I find when gaming on the Asus that I can still play games using the laptop speakers without a problem, but headphones are nicer.

  • Forgot to add the USB-C DisplayPort in the Asus is also connected directly to the RTX2060.

I have the 4800h rtx2060 Asus Tuf - If you have any questions about it, just ask.

    • Thank you for chiming in with your opinion! I do genuinely think that I like hp one a bit more but the Asus one is honestly very solid too.

You actually reminded me of a good point since I got a 2.5 2TB HDD and 2.5 1TB SSD in my current laptop, so I was hoping to carry them over to the new laptop, but that seems like it's not going to work with the Asus one, isn't it? Since it only has one 2.5" bay?

Oh one more question, you mentioned Usb-c to display port, where did you get yours from? I looked around quickly online and I think their price is around… 20-40 aud? Is it normally around that range? My laptop has two mini display port, so I need to get a new cable if I choose asus

  • They're both solid machines which meet your specification. I would look into reviews for things like battery life, audio and thermal cooling which aren't obvious from just looking at specs and make your decision from them.

    • Yeah good point, I didn't even remember to look into the temperature stuff. Thanks for the reminder.

So far I'm a bit leaning toward the dell one but maybe few bits more research will convince me otherwise
