Security for my rental

My rental property is great aside from their are two floor to ceiling windows at the front of the property and two of the bedrooms.

I live alone.

I would like to know what my best options for security on these windows are?
The windows in the lounge room face the street and although I think it’s fairly safe, you can never be to sure.

What are my options as a renter. I don’t mind paying as it will give me peace of mind. I’m not comfortable in it’s current state with the large windows facing the street. Especially as if looking at a new tv.

  • Since you are renting anything that needs permanent wiring most likely would not be an option.
I would get one or two Arlo or Eufy Cameras and install them facing the street or the area you want to capture.
I would also get a couple of Smart Door & Window Sensors and install them on the windows facing the street. For additional security you could go for a complete kit including siren and PIR sensors. Xiaomi Aquara sensors are quite popular on OZBargain -For Aquara you will need to purchase a Hub/Gateway too.

  • bodybuilder flatmate

    get a motion sensor alarm.

  • Get some window film from Bunnings or the like, and stick in on. When you move out, remove the film. Recommend asking permission first.

Bunnings even have a video on it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12XcJ11gZzI

  • Window film if the owner allows it and renters insurance to cover your contents.

  • Is the security issue that you don't want people to see you? - if so, get curtains. Or is the security issue that people will break in through the window?

    Or the windows open-able?

  • Theives are unlikely to come in through a large front window. It’ll either make too much noise when breaking it, or it’s too visible. They are also unlikely to break in for a new TV - too hard to move.

Are you in a high crime area or just ‘normal’ suburbia

    • Normal suburbia. But I have a fear of being robbed. Working with a psych atm. I’d I had my way I would have iron bars everywhere.

      • That’s fair enough. You obviously need to do what is important to you.

Maybe start with some cheap dummy cameras. Make sure your portable valuables are not placed within sight of windows when you go out.

Another tip the police told my grandma many years ago was to leave a sacrificial small amount of cash in a realistic elf easy place to find. In the unlikely event you do get a break in, they mostly will take the cash and leave quickly.
