Mastercard Debit Refund?

So I went to EB Games today to return a PS4 game (Game of Thrones) and everything went fine when I first swiped my card. The card went through fine, and I got an immediate refund into my account. However, it didn't process properly on their end.

So I went to swipe my card again, but accidentally pay-waved the card, meaning the money left my account. The guy said it was normal with pay-wave, and that I should see the refund back in my account by Wednesday.

Guess my question is, do I have anything to worry about? Why didn't it go through instantly the second time?

I've had several refunds with paywave / tap.

If they're processing it as a refund, it shouldn't matter how you present your card.

    Sounds dodgy to me.

    First transaction failed
Second transaction was processed as a sale instead of a refund.
I hope there was a third transaction for the original refund.

No third transaction. I have the receipt for both transactions though, and each list it as a refund. Apart from the money leaving, it doesn't mention anything on it about a sale.

      • Yep paywaved refunds are the norm though, just because you paywaved it doesn't mean the money left your account.

next time what you should do is to press Savings.

  • The most likely scenario is that the first time when you swiped, you pressed Savings (or Cheque), which routes the refund through the EFTPOS network, making it instant.
But the Paywave/Paypass feature always defaults to going through the Visa/Mastercard Network, except when Least-cost Routing is in effect.

I'd say at this stage you should have nothing to worry about, just give it a few days - I'm certain you will have both receipts so any issues you can always contact the store (step 1) or contact your bank (step 2).

Edit: Actually, hang on. I re-read your post and it does seem a bit dodgy:

So I went to swipe my card again, but accidentally pay-waved the card, meaning the money left my account. The guy said it was normal with pay-wave

Completely incorrect. You said you got refunded the first time, but for the money to leave your account the second time they would have to have charged you again?? PayWave has little to do with this.

    • Still have both receipts, so if I have to contest anything, I don't think I'll have any issues.

On my banking app, it lists the first transaction as a refund, and the second transaction as a "reversed transaction", but still says the payment method was a refund…

Either way, I think I have little choice but to give them the benefit of the doubt and wait till Wednesday to see if my refund comes through. If not, then I guess I'll be paying them another visit.

      • Sounds like you got a refund and then the guy accidentally presumably charged you with the second pay wave but that was immediately refunded.
