If you want a decent wheelbarrow that'll last, get one with wooden handles and a plastic tub instead.

    • Yep, I’ve been doing some pretty tough house improvements over the last month. Can’t imagine a metal tub surviving with the abuse my plastic tub has. And plastic is cheaper.

Depends on where and how it'll be stored (along with intended use).

Plastic tub: lighter weight, won't rust, more susceptible to UV/sunglight damage if stored outside (and then it'll crack- even if 'UV treated'). Also doesn't like rough treatment (throwing broken bits of concrete into it- sharp edges, heavy etc).
Metal tub: heavier, stronger for heavy loads of rubble, and stronger for throwing heavy objects into it, but once you break through the powdercoat paint layer it'll start to rust. If you don't treat it rough it'll last decades even if stored outside.

If you're storing in the shed/garage, I'd go plastic. If it'll live outside, I'd go metal. UV stablised is beneficial… but its still plastic.

Powdercoat handles: worst option imo. Hard to see rust developing under the powdercoat. All the bad bits of a metal tub, and no benefits. OP's barrow is powdercoat handles (I'd avoid).
Galvanised metal handles: much better/durable option, but no flex when carrying heavier loads. With good quality rubber handles will happily live outside for decades.
Wooden handles: my most preferred if money is no object, as you get a little flex when wheeling heavy loads, much easier to control and lift, but if left exposed to elements will deteriorate quickly.

Galvanised handles (with nice rubber grips) is the go. The legs are important too. NO TUBES! flat cut metal bent into shape will last a lot longer.

I use a wheelbarrow daily for work. Wooden handles and metal tub is the option picked by most worksites.

At home I have a galvanised metal handle, metal tub wheelbarrow that is left outside in the elements next to the shed. Same wheelbarrow for nearly 25 years. Tub has a little surface rust in some spots, but is still watertight, strong and functional.

A plastic tub will not last as long if left in the sun… but the flipside is that its lighter, so easier to manoeuvrer around tight spaces. Plus there's narrow tub options which look awesome for around the house.

If you're going to store it out of the sun, get plastic. If you're throwing bricks, concrete, rocks etc into it, get metal.

      • We can tell your a Barrow expert. Thanks for the advice.

      • Good bit a written words there. I was going to touch on some of those points you already mentioned but you nailed it.

My old man's steel tub with tubular steel handles has been going for years, anyways left outdoors and can support more weight with ease than these modern layout barrows.
For any people out there looking for a decent wheelbarrow go on Gumtree and about an old one, it may look well used but with some killrust it will last decades as mentioned.
