Is a Nintendo Switch worth the hype at the moment?

Finally jumped the gun on a Nintendo Switch for the Fam. Older son had been wanting one, but baulking at the price.

At the moment the price is pretty much RRP from this year. Has been as low as $369 for V2 late last year.

Being there is a bit of a shortage there seems to still be no end in sight for lower prices like last year. Gee the Animal crossing edition is now going on Ebay for $700-$2000. Ok the later is a bit of a joke. Most stores sold out pre-order.

The Switch seems to be a OZB favourite, even at the RRP.

Just wanting to see what other OZbs think of the Switch. Have you enjoyed it? What have you liked about it and it's features.

I think there is a kerfuffle over the Switch. ;)

  • i will get one when 2nd hand is $150-ish and with the old hack-able serial number.

    • Won't the fad be over by the time it reaches that price point secondhand.

    • Don't you need both hackable serial no. and low firmware?
Seems unlikely someone would have this unless intentionally not updating and in that case would know they're Switch is worth more.

      • Its a hardware exploit for the OG switches. So couldn't be patches with software updates.

    • If anything hackable ones will keep their value. Was the same with the 3ds

  • please replace RR with RRP

  • I received mine as a gift and don’t play it that much at the moment due to family and work commitments. If I didn’t have one, I probably wouldn’t buy one at the moment.
I guess it really depends if your interest in their range of games and whether you see yourself Spending the time playing.

Great when you need to adult at the same time.
I.e. pick it up for 10-20 min sessions at a time anywhere and put it down with a press of a button when need be (baby wakes up, work calls, time to go out, waiting for something else etc.).
I cba booting up my other consoles anymore and actively buying switch versions of games when I can.
For kids I guess the main attraction would be taking it to school and playing it anywhere.

Taking a switch to school? Really?

  • It's gotta be an Animal Crossing Special Edition or bust.

    • Your only getting the special colorway and not even the game with it. Good if you want one purely just to turn it over I think. I do like the colour, but not the price.

  • Remember it's high demand and the newest console on the market. So the high price I feel is understandable, though may not necessarily be justifiable. Value is in the eye of the beholder. I grew up on Nintendo and I'm now a parent. So I don't have time for long gaming sessions. The switch pick up and play style suits me right now. The kids love the switch as well. Pokemon and mario kart keeps them entertained. I bought the 2019 version at full RRP on release and don't regret it. I also catch up and play with high school mates on an irregular basis. Lots of fun for us, but we are a gamer/parenting crowd. We were all gamers in high school and have continued the tradition. (a lot less now with the kids)

I bought mine during the 2018 Black Friday sales and paid like $280 after cashback, and I've put countless hours into Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing etc. I'm glad I bought one back then and don't have to pay the $400 minimum they're asking now, but even then it's probably worth it when you do $/hour of entertainment analysis. Great console.

    • How's the battery life on it now. The V2 battery lasts alot longer than the original. But other than that it's the same unit as I believe they just make it more efficient through software.

      • I'd say I manage to get 3-4 hours out of it still, although admittedly a lot of my gaming on it has been 20 mins of Animal Crossing before bed the past month or so. I'm also playing Ring Fit Adventure which I can only play docked.

But even then, I only play Switch at home. The portability factor is just for when I want to play in bed so I'm always close to a powerpoint anyway.

      • I believe V2 does have marginally more processing power too.

  • I originally bought the lite for $230 during one of eBay's Plus Hourly deals. I liked it so much I decided to get a full switch during black friday sales. It's definitely has some of the best games on it, it's probably worth it for Mario Odyssey and BoTW alone.
I had owned a lot of Wii U titles and am seeing them rehashed or re-released as definitive editions. This kind of takes away some of the value away since I've experienced a good deal of them (Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, Donkey Kong Frozen Country).
They are excellent games though and if you hadn't owned a Wii U, this is a fairly big library. Having said that, I have repurchased BoTW and am replaying and am enjoying it more this time through. I might even get some of the others because they're such good games.
No regrets (definitely not because I got it so cheap) but it looks to be currently avaliable for $410 which I think is a fair price.

  • Kind of a strange question. It's a videogame console. Do you like games or not?

It's worth is really like any other with the features that differentiate it from the them being:

    1. The ability to play it portable
    2. Nintendo's library of 1st party games unavailable on the other consoles - and on that they have proven for over 30 years to make amazing games

As a kid brought up on Nintendo and owning every one of their consoles except the SNES getting a switch was a no brainer. I am now able to share all its best games with my kids.

Yeah you pay a premium for Nintendo products, but it's no different then other items people buy (looking at you Apple)

Yeah i got one for the family at the start of covid. Kids are 11 (boy) and 8 (girl). Mr 11 has wanted a ps4 for a long time but we've resisted until he's a bit older.

We went with the switch because i believe it's more family friendly than other consoles. There are a lot of 4 player couch co-op and vs games that the kids can play against each other and we play with them sometimes too.

There are still a few "teenage" games like fortnite etc to keep the young fella happy.

A lot of the games don't support voice chat (easily) so there's less negativity and rubbish.

So it's a good option for a family. Not as good for a serious gamer. But mr 11 doesn't need to be a serious gamer.

The price is reasonable but the costs do add up. An extra pair of joycons is $110. Some must have games like Mario kart at $60-$80. A pro controller or 2. So you do have to watch what you spend. But for us it's been worth it.

Edit: if you want some recommendations on family games, let me know.

Good thing you didn't get him ps4, he would have been somewhat devasted with the recent showcase of ps5.

    • Great comment. My older one did have a little Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP colour. I think it's still lying around somewhere and still works with some games. Never owned a Nintendo console as always had the PSs. Well up till PS3. All the kids are playing PC games.

In actual fact I think my partner will use it more, just as people have said due to the pick up and play nature to enable random play.

I'm just hoping we don't have the same accident that our neighbour had. Kids were a bit excited with one game and smashed the TV. Expensive game.

Will take you up on some tips on games as have a 12 year old at some stage.

      • What game was that?
What were the consequences from that "accident"?
No more gaming for a while? Psych visits? Anger management classes?

        • +1

I don't know what game it was. Mum had to quickly go out to JB to look for a new one before Hubby came home.

          • @Melb69: Tell Mum that she should never allow the kids to play:

            • Super Meat Boy
            • Hotline Miami
            • Dark Souls Series
            • Bloodborne
            • Ghouls n Goblins (Retro)

Orherwise it will be another new tv.

            Have a lovely weekend.

            • @Lysander: If they were an OZber they would have posted an thread asking what to do about a cracked screen and how to claim it under warranty as kids deny all charges for damage to it. Gaming is dangerous from the sounds of it. I'm going to banish the family to the partners TV.

I’m thinking it was a Wii game and someone didn’t use the strap, lol

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. My kids really enjoy it and i play with them too. It's probably a little tricky for younger kids, but they could just sit on a gun and blast stuff. Note that it's best to have at least 3 people playing so that each person can have one (main) job. Otherwise switching between guns, driving and shields is full-on.

Blazing Beaks has a decent multiplayer battle mode (up to 4 players). It's pretty chaotic, but fun. Plus the battles are quick, so even if you die early, the next game is never far away. It also has a 2 player co-op.

My kids enjoy Death Squared and Flat Heroes (both co-ops), but probably too hard/strategic for younger kids. Flat Heroes would probably be OK because only one person has to survive to complete the level. In Death Squared as soon as someone dies, you have to restart the level. My wife also likes the strategy of Death Squared.

Shipped is fun, but controlling the boats isn't that easy. I mainly got it because up to 8 people can play on the one Switch.

Stikbold is probably the best. The good thing about it is that even if you get out early, you get to stand on the sideline and cause mayhem with a variety of objects. Sometimes my kids even prefer to get out first so that they can cause havoc from the side.

The Just Dance games can be good for kids, except they're pretty expensive. I find the actual dance moves don't matter that much and long as they're moving to the beat.

Moving Out is fun, but the controls would be difficult for younger kids.

I'm really keen on Tricky Towers but don't have it yet.

I'd also like to check out Light Fingers. It's a turn by turn board game. But I'm waiting for a sale.

My son and I also play a bit of Rocket League together. It's hard and takes a while to master the controls and actually be able to win games. But my daughter still enjoys driving around like a lunatic even though she has very little influence on the game and rarely touches the ball.

Mario kart is an obvious one. We also have Mario party and that's the one my wife gets into the most too. They are both expensive, but worth it.

        Hope that helps.

        • Thks again. Will definitely look at a few of these in the future. The boys opened it today. Both seemed wrapped. The younger one has already put on Animal Crossing and saying he's go8ng to be putting in alot of hours on it. He's played it at a friend's place.

Think you need to look at the games available and see if you actually care about any of them. I have no interest in the games available so don't see the value in owning one. If theres a few games you want to play, you might see the value.

    • This is pretty much the answer. I got one end of last year sale, played Pokemon and couple others for a bit and quickly lost interest. Just not for me so wasn't worth it. Games are also ridiculously overpriced (like Witcher 3) on it.

But, if you like the Nintendo first party game offerings and bought into the Animal Crossing hype (still don't understand it) then it's good for you.

Nintendo Switch hype? Didn't realise anybody still bought Nintendo stuff that was over 10 years old.

    • Surpringly it is still a thing. 😏

  • Have one. Only expect to play switch exclusive games like animal crossing, breath of the wild etc as graphic is really bad on most games
