I bought the Ikasu 7 piece set yesterday. It seems all sorts of global knife sets are popping up this EOFY. My question is, can anyone advise if the knives/knife quality are the same or different in all these sets? Or is the difference just in the stands?

      Same same but different (stand/block)

    • +1

Global have heaps of different knives that are for different chopping purposes. If they all use the same metal that is the CROMOVA 18 stainless steel metal. Then the quality is the same.

      • +1

They are all same quality. Either different blocks or different sort.

For those that grabbed one of these recent knife deals - a honing steel/ceramic is a must-have. Probably want to grab one of these - not sure if a good deal (Amazon says 'limited time deal') and 'only' 3 left - https://www.amazon.com.au/Global-G-74-Sharpening-Knife-Sharp…

    • Any different with different price range of these sharpening rods?

    • $50.99 was all time low 12 months ago so this is reasonable. Grabbed one myself.

      • What's the best way to sharpen global knives?
Rod vs mino vs auto sharpener?
Don't have space for the wheel thing

        • Don't use the rod to sharpen - that's more of a once a week keeping the blade straight type thing. I use a set of stones and many hours of youtube tutorials on sharpening. I'd say that's the best if you have the time. (Don't forget the leather strop!)

        • Not a whole set - but you could start with this - it's 1000 grit - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Global-K-45-King-Water-Whetstone…

          • @kiwizz: Thanks will check it out!
Another ozb post mentioned global's minosharpener device? Is that similarly effective?

        • +3

For those who don't know too much about using stones it's best not to practice on these… Get a minosharp. Cheap and Easy.
If you want to practice with a stone get some kiwis and stone away. Then when you're confident in your skills you can sharpen something more expensive.

          • @dasher86: good point - def don't start your stone sharpening journey with decent knifes!

        • +2

learn to use the stone. Long term, the Minosharp wheel will re-profile your knife and it wont ever get sharp no matter how many times you run your blade through that wheel.

          I know from experience.

Instead, get yourself a King whetstone (1000 grit) and follow Ryky's videos on burrfection (youtube).

Despite what others say, its not that easy to "screw up" knife sharpening by whetstone. Once you learn how to do it, its a 10-20 minute job.
Unless you're sharpening mirror polished knives, theres nothing to fear of trying to sharpen global knives with the whetstone. Good knives to learn off really…

          • @KnifeEnthusiastBoi: Cheers! Thanks for the recommendation. Will check out his tutorials.

I might get an inexpensive Ikea sharpening tool in the interim while I learn how to use the whetstone for $14.99 - looks exactly the same as the minosharpener

            • +1

@G Wok: In my opinion, save your money. When you get your knives, they should last you a few months before you need to sharpen. Get yourself the king whetstone, practice on whatever you have at home for the time being.

That $14.99 is 1/4 of the way to your $50 whetstone.

And you wont end up with a piece of junk later that you wont use

    • Thank you. Grabbed perhaps the last one.

  • Thanks OP. Purchased a set. Good price

  • Just need a single global chef’s knife under $80 delivered. Can’t find yet.
