MP3 Player >= 32GB (iPod Classic Alternative)

i know there are a few other threads, but nothing that i wanted.

i've have an iPod (160GB) for a while and it died. and i want something similar. preferably not a flash drive inside (good ol spinning disk time)

soooo… preferable features:

  • cheap (<$200 or i would just get another iPod)
  • spinning disk
  • drag and drop transfer (NOT 3rd party/manufacturer software)
  • FLAC
  • Quality (not on dhgate or dealExtreme, something that will last)

i dont need video/games/apps.

Thanks for your help, really any suggestions would be nice

  • Switching between different brand MP3 players does mean increased frustration, in that you have to learn a new interface. many of the no name MP3 players have lousy interfaces, so there is not much to choose from.

Also Apple is reportedly dropping all but the ipod Touch and nano, so hard drive units are becoming increasingly hard to find, due to market not liking them compared to flash drives.

Maybe looking for closeouts on soon to be discontinued the hard drive models.

    • i dont know where u got that idea, i am aware of lousy interfaces, but i dont mind learning a new one.

drag and drop transfer (NOT 3rd party/manufacturer software)

by this i meant on my computer, some mp3 players require you to install there own software (much like itunes, but generally much worse). my old toshiba gigabeat was an example of this, it was horrible.

i can see the appeal of touches and nano, but they are not for me, one of the requirement was a spinning drive, not flash memory.

(and yes i have heard that rumor, but i am looking for an ipod alternative)

  • Not sure what you mean by spinny disk but I heard the cowon players are really good quality and they all play flac. The prices are a but steep though.

    • sorry if i wasn't clearer, by spinning disk i meant not flash.

      flash generally means:

      • more expensive (compare 160GB ipod classic, to 8GB ipod touch)
      • are generally ^2 (8,16,32,64,128 - rather than 30,60,120 etc)

flash has advantages (speed, reliability) , but none that I'm looking for.

    • also the cowon x7 has a HDD drive, but its too expensive (it has touch screen/flash etc etc)

im starting to think ipod classic is my only option :<

  • yo have a look around (on ebay etc) for iriver HDD players. i've been using their products since i got my first mp3 player and their sound quality and build has always been tops for me.
