What's The Best Value Smartphone Right Now

I want to know thoughts on what the best value for money smartphone is right now AND why (Price range 400-700).
Has to have better than mid level range specs, closer to higher end without the price tag.

Good camera, good battery life, good processor, decent storage, good screen resolution, good features and good price.

Phones that come to mind - Mi9T, Mi9T PRO, OnePlus6T maybe 7T, Poco phone, Oppo Reno2 Z, LG V40, Realme 6 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A51, Google Pixel 3.

For me I have the Mi9T as the best of the bunch for specs and value.

iPhone SE 2 to the list for non Android

    • Can be any phone. Nice one

      • -2

It's faster than any Android on the planet.

      • -1

If you can squeeze the extra $$ to get the iPhone SE 2020, it definitely, by far, is the best value. Class-leading chipset, 5+ years of 0day OS support/updates. Can't go wrong

        • -1

          lol

          • +1

@wiipantz: Not my fault Android users don't see the value in that, ya feel me?

            • -1

@ThithLord: the OS comment just had me, hahahahaha

              • @wiipantz: I'm sure you can elaborate how it had you? If you say LmAo WALLED GARDEN, no need to bother

                • -5

@ThithLord: That being synonymous with value cracks me up every day of the week. Also just iOS in general is a laugh, good for kids I hear. Value and the fruit stand are quite rare these days long are the days of the computer company that happens to make phones made anything of value really, now they are a phone company that happens to make (lol) computers and even those will be glorified phones with keyboards soon. Looking at thier ARM chips, totally makes me laugh thinking of this and it's fanboi base

                  • +2

@wiipantz: That's a lot of sentences to try and say I can't elaborate. Have an up vote.

                    • -5

@ThithLord: I know reading must be hard for some especially on toys, good luck to you and your future :)

                      • +6

@wiipantz: Not going in for the os preference - having used both, I actually don't disagree with the idea of an iPhone SE 2020. Price for one of those is around $681 which will be more than what you would pay for an equivalent (from an end user experience point of view) in Android. However the support life over 5 years is a big one, thats no need to replace over 5 years. Having been a pixel, LG and also Samsung user in the past, I found it was more like 2 years. I'm now on a iPhone that was part of my job, I was very reluctant at first as I was always an android user, and I will say I miss having widgets on the homepage, but that is about it. I was using an iphone 7 happily up until January when work replaced it, I would have been happy to go another few years on it to be honest.

Also if you have a job where access to their information is controlled, often they won't allow any phones that aren't patched or updated regularly.

Just my $0.02 - each person has different preferences and requirements.

                        • -4

@admira: Cool. iOS is just trash overall is the main reason to laugh also the company sends shivers down my spine in the last 10 or so years. I love the mental gymnastics applied by the users but ultimately each to their own. If people are happy with less for more go for it

                          • +1

@wiipantz: Another way of expressing it in sheer value terms (since that was the question):

                            5 years outlay
                            iphone SE 2020 - ~$700

                            Mi9T - 2 year lifespan (probably) - ~$450
2 years later, another phone similar standard - $450
2 years later, another phone similar standard - $450
                            Total: $1,350

that 2 years will depend on what you do with it - just sheer basics, calling, texting, running basic apps, you can extract a lot more out of it. Even if you got 4 years out of it though you'd still be ahead with the iphone. If you are dead against iOS, then its a non starter, but that's not a position formed on value.

And to be clear, the minute I no longer require an iphone for my job, I'll go back to android, as its my preference from a user perspective.

                            • -2

@admira: Cool story bro. lot's assumptions, I love the 5 year part personally

                              • +1

@wiipantz: Yeah 5 years is also an assumption - in terms of cool story, thanks. I have used an iphone for nearly 4 years with no problems personally and was happy to keep going, never been able to do the same with an android through a few different iterations… Nexus 5x, Lg, samsung… perhaps I chose the wrong models, and obviously been a while since I used one and its a rapidly evolving landscape.

I see you haven't answered the question though - whats your low value phone of choice?

                                • -3

@admira: Phones can be now a personal choice for some, this thread is about low to mid ranges, and I found the idea of 5 years and a fraudulent OS comical. Still do… so I merely answered that and haven't addressed the OP. You guys though have seriously type cast the fanboi status well and keep that fruit stand pumping and you know what, great! the half trillion apple store value salutes you all I'm sure. I would assume that's the personal flavor, I personally haven't touched iOS since 2011 in any great use and avoid it willingly for many reasons and that's personal. You ask about my selection in this current climate well funny you ask but I bought something recently but it doesn't apply as it's sub $280 AUD new, it wasn't for me so I can't comment personally. Once again, thankyou so much for that hearty guffaw at 5 years I'll be loling at that for the next half decade easily

                            • @admira: How do you know the iphone SE 2020 will last even 3 years? It's all assumptions. I have made androids last 4 years before easily at half the price of an iphone. The mi9T would last a lot longer than 2 years with the specs it has and battery size. Every battery starts to get worse after 2-3 years for any phone, iphones somehow aren't exempt of this lol

                        • @admira: Same for me, Admire. Long-time Android user until my current phone (iPhone 1st Gen) - will never go back.

                          • -1

@ThithLord: bahaha this too much 5 years your killing me still

                            • +5

@wiipantz: lol. So when I actually state reasons why the iPhone SE is better value, that makes me a fanboi - but you can't put forth a single point as to why it isn't? At least I can back up my reasoning, bruv.

Btw, it's you're. eg You're not making an sense.

                      • +1

@wiipantz: Belittling someone and their preference doesn't add value to the OP or the convo, which is completely unlike, say, your thoughtful comments to Frunk about his options.

I'm for just using the tool that works best for you - whatever platform.

                • +2

                  @ThithLord: That was cold dawg.

        • +3

As someone who was on an iPhone for 3 years and moved back to Android, personally I won't go back to iOS.
Android had a far greater ability to install custom ROMs, I can tweak the interface to how I want it to look exactly, ability to install apk files outside of the Google Store, rooting the phone to install security apps with remote access, much better integration with Google for business, etc.

I couldn't do any of those things on iPhones. And it was the same reasons for Macs. Had an iMac for 6 months and hated it, went back to win10.

Apple is great for people who want things to work out of the box but aren't power users. For someone like me, I like tinkering with it and Android/windows gives me far greater ability to do that.

Are these enough reasons? These aren't biased opinions, it's my own first hand experience using both platforms

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Jimmy, those are all fantastic reasons to prefer Android! Absolutely. I don't think it aides WiiPantz's argument that Apple is not good value, though.

Apple is great for people who want things to work out of the box but aren't power users.

This I have to disagree with completely. I work in I.T. and it's pretty evenly split regarding iOS/Android, and majority are power users.

            • +3

@ThithLord: I got a Nokia 8 for about $370 after eBay discount in August 2018. No plans to upgrade yet. Should be ok for at least another year. Maybe 2.

In support of what you're saying, I know people still happy on their iPhone 6.

Against what you're saying, I like the option to use custom ROMs, unlocked bootloader aps, and to not be locked in to the apple ecosystem.

              Security -> iPhone
User experience if not technophobe -> android

              For me anyways.

              • @ozbjunkie: Oops just replied to my own comment lol

            • -3

@ThithLord: bahahahaahaha the hits keep rolling. That's a total no, maybe for the basic levels and middle managers not power users. Ahaha too much

          • @[Deactivated]: I like both, but the one thing that really shits me about android, is that you cant just swipe down and search for apps on your phone. You have to search through the play store. I have no idea where my apps are.

            • @[Deactivated]: yeah you can sometimes its swipe up lol or two fingers down. Or you rcan customize to your whim.

            • @[Deactivated]: I'm on pixel 2 and you can search. It's a swipe up and the search bar is at the top.

          • @[Deactivated]: One more major thing that made me stick with Android. Transferring files between my phone and my desktop. With the iPhone it was a real PITA, they force you to use iTunes but with my Pixel 2 I could literally open file explorer and find what I need in 2 seconds. I hated how the iPhone would not let me create folders and put stuff that makes more sense to me. Maybe it's changed recently but it was so crappy on the iPhone 6. Had it for 2 years and was so annoyed with it

            • -1

@[Deactivated]: You can create folders on iPhone and air drop is way better than anything on android.

              • @[Deactivated]: Fair enough. I didn't have those options between iOS and windows 10

  • UltraMintt X3

For me I have the Mi9T as the best of the bunch for specs and value

    So why the question?

    • I want to know what others have as their best and what other choices are out there.

  • +3

    Escobar Fold 2

    • It's so cheap, too - can buy multiples!

  • +3

    Second the above, iphone SE

  • The best phone that exist atm is probably the one plus 7t pro McLaren. My phone :p it's the last popup model. Currently.

  • Wait until Musk makes a phone!!! Kidding of course - or am I????
Thanks guys I wasn’t disappointed at the iOS vs Android debate which came in the strong winner in the comments. I’ve missed that since batterygate when it was the Apple vs Samsung debate.
My 2c it seems to me that if you are married to one OS or the other then you don’t have an opinion you have a bias so nobody takes you seriously. The guy knows what he wants and just wants reassurance. Give him what he wants. Buy your stupid Android brick or the real phone from the fruit market :p

  • I am on a disability pension and don't buy new phones. The new iPhones people mention sounds like best value if you are happy being an iUser. I personally know I always want better and more and stick to second hand flagship androids. Currently on a Samsung Galaxy S9+ . Resale is typically same as purchase within a 2yr window, but sometimes I sell my old phone for a bit less, but then gladly invest $100 extra to get the next generation phone. Benefits are nice clean interface, big smile on my dial, and always easy to migrate these days with cloud computing.

    • +1

Negatives are 12 billion semen of the previous owner in every nook and crack you can find.

  • I can't speak to Android because I haven't used one for any real amount of time.

I can vouch for the longevity of iOS devices thanks to 4-6 years of supported updates. Our iPad Air 2 from 2014 comfortably runs the latest OS, it's 6th major version — iOS 13.5, it started on iOS 8! The extended life gives us real value.

If you love the overall Android experience, you should stick with it unless you're willing to try something different. I believe the Pixel 3a ($649 regular price) should be on your shortlist. Unlike other Android options, you get the latest OS updates immediately.

Having recommended Pixel, this post from the founder of DuckDuckGo - biased of course - gives me a little pause from recommending it wholeheartedly — the level of visibility Google has over your activities and movements online and IRL is extensive.

    • That’s why Apple will end up owning Duck Duck Go

    • Genuinely surprised the just announced iPad OS 14 will support our 2014 iPad Air 2.
Seven major OS versions for an old device — that's longevity.

  • The new Motorola g8 models are out. Ive got a g5 plus at the moment which is almost 4yrs old. Been dropped from heights, done dozens of work trips to mines and workshops and is still going strong.
The new ones look ok but haven't been in to try hands on yet, think JB already have them with $50 off

    • That’s an unOzbargain recommendation. #GerryGetsNothingFromMe
