Xbox Layout Controller for PC

Hey guys,

I’m planning on getting a controller for PC games on steam.

I usually play pc games and occasionally play storyline games like AC, resident evil, a plague tale : innocence which I definitely enjoy more by playing it with a controller.

Since I’m not gonna use the controller often, I didn’t really want to buy an official Xbox controller as it can be a little bit pricey and I’m not sure when it will have a discount any time soon.

Should I really just wait for the Xbox controller to be on sale? Or should I just get a budget controller?

If it’s the latter, I’m asking for any advice regarding any wired/wireless controller (with an Xbox layout instead of a PS4 controller layout as I prefer the former) that can be used on a pc.

Huge thanks for any advice or recommendations. Cheers!

Regards.

The Xbox controller is worth the money. I've spent more than $80 on budget controllers and hours and hours of my time trying to get them to work.

I've has good experience with the PDP Wired Controller for Xbox One & Windows. I bought one on sale around 18 months ago when they were really cheap, like $20. They are on sale at the moment for $40. Here is a link (not affiliated, just an example): https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/xbox-one/234754-xbox-one-…
They work fine in any PC, plug and play. No issues because it uses Microsofts official drivers. I know Dualshock 4s have lot of problems (mostly resolved with Steams Controller Config new thing they added).

I will say though that the PDP Wired Controller do feel more chunky than the normal controller. The buttons feel a little clanky too. But I had no issues with mine for around 18 months before the A button (mostly pressed in games to confirm things) started having a problem where if I pressed it once, It would input 2-3 times.

I actually bought another one two days ago to play P4 Golden on PC because my older faulty one kept skipping dialog because of multiple A inputs.

There are other brands too, but I haven't tried them. @Play is a brand for both Xbox One and PS4 Wired Controllers.

I can't comment on these however as I have not tried them.

If you don't mind Xbox 360 Controllers, you can't go wrong with an official wired one. Don't buy those knock off ones, they suck. Try find them used on Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Gumtree, somewhere local. Eb Games has took them off their site sadly, had them there for like $10-15 for a long time. Lot of people don't like the Xbox 360 DPAD though.

    Hope I helped somewhat.

I been using the same Xbox 360 Controller on PC since about 2011, and i use it regularly for GTA V, other racing games.

    Imo get the offical.

Yeah, I love the 360 controller more. I actually liked the DPAD on it (huge minority opinion). They are getting harder to find, or it might be just where I live. The unofficial knock off ones on Ebay etc for cheap are total trash though.

      • I actually liked the DPAD on it (huge minority opinion).

Sure are in the minority there lol, although i only use it to toggle different modes etc it's never a primary button for movement or anything so doesn't bother me anyway.

For something you interface with reguarly though i'd personally not cheap out on it.

I liked it because the DPAD on the 360 controller is one big button with the 4 directions on it, and I always felt it was easier to use (obviously just in long games like JRPGs). For any competitive style game at the time like fighting or FPS games, yeah it was awful.

      • I generally like the XBOX controllers but the DPAD is definitely not its strong point. Try playing a game like Killer Instinct on the DPAD, it's pretty much impossible to pull off dragon-punch style moves. No problem doing this on a PS3 or PS4 controller or Nintendo's Pro controllers but I've had problems with this on my 360, One, and One S controllers. To be fair, I am mostly comparing KI with SF's controls, but I would expect the experience to be comparable. The One/One S controller DPAD is definitely better than the 360's DPAD which would often hit the sides of the opening and stop it from triggering the direction, but it's still quite bad. It's something I really hope Microsoft works on for the Series X as it doesn't seem like something that should be this hard to get right.

  • You can get official black one for about $60 with the cable. Cheaper than most coloured ones and usually cheaper at computer stores rather than game stores etc.

    • Any recommendations on where to get one at $60?

Cheapest I've found so far is MSY at $65 + $10 shipping.

Hmmm, must have been an old deal.
Check out UMart if you're in NSW or QLD, $65 pick up might be possible?

        • Thanks for that, but in SA, unfortunately.

$65 is probably the lowest standard price now, as they have a captive audience.

Just have to find best shipping price.

The Xbox One controller is the best damn controller I've ever used. The ergonomics is just right. And it will probably last a couple of years.

    • I think the Nintendo Pro Controller is better… just something about having the joysticks parallel/symmetrical is ergonomic to most untrained people.

Official Xbox controller is $65 and instock at CPL online(Melbourne). Good buy if you are Melbourne based as you can click and collect and they transfer stock locally to a store of your choice for free.

Most good third party ones are $50. but for $65 the official controller feels very nice to hold and is very comfortable.

    • The shipping kills the deal. Yikes!

  • I'd recommend an xbox controller though quality control is hit and miss in my opinion. Compatibility wise the xbox controllers work best with windows (you'll need microusb/usb for wired or an adaptor for wireless).

Do you have consoles? It would be smart to plan around that too. I've got a sn30+ pro and it works with a few devices and you can get adaptors to make xbox controllers work with switch/PS and vice versa.

    • Newer controllers also have bluetooth support.

  • I exclusively use an Xbox controller for PC games. Best thing ever, I don't get cramping like I do with KB/M.

Once you've got one, you'll get a very quick return on your investment as it's now hard to even find many games that don't natively work.

  • I've picked up a few xbox one controllers on sale at various times for under $50; works well with PC

  • When it comes to controllers, you definitely get what you pay for. I would recommend picking up the official controller.

  • Official Xbox controllers are the way to go. And, they do go on sale a fair bit, pretty good if you can snatch one for under $75. Definitely worth the money IMHO. Owned quite a few, not because of it breaking, but because I simply just wanted another look. All of them still work fine.
