Need Advice on Basic PC Build

I'm planning to use a PC as an NVR for maybe 4 or 5 IP cams. I was thinking of purchasing a refurbished Dell or HP but I'm thinking of stretching the budget to get a new basic PC for future proofing. Anyone have a build list with maybe a 9th or 10th Gen i3 with a mobo with onboard graphics? Tried doing it online but haven't really built one before might run into compatibility issues with the components.

  • I'm assuming you've also considered whether an off the shelf NAS might be a suitable option (in terms of both purchase price + ongoing costs).

    • Yep and after all my research I have decided to run Blue Iris on a PC.

  • igpu is no longer onboard chipset graphics, but integrated into CPU

cheapest intel i3 with F denomination behind came without igpu

you're better off with amd 3000g , or intel pentium if strictly intel

by future proofing for NVR, you're looking at up-to-date motherboard features (storage expansion / speed / config , etc?)

    • Future proofing in the sense that I want to keep it running for as long as I can and run the NVR software (Blue Iris) well into the future as it gets updated. I'm also planning to install 2 NIC cards into it so I can have the IP cams in their own subnet with no access to the internet. This is the main feature I want with using a PC as an NVR.

And thanks for dropping some knowledge about the GPU, it's almost been a solid decade since i tinkered around with a PC.

      • dell sff has 2 pcie slots (16x + 4x) and win10 is here to stay with no future OS (they often come with legit win10 upgrade from the win7 coe license sticker on casing)

only thing to worry is hardware longevity , where some had psu failing and bloated/blown caps on motherboard, afterall they've been running like 6-8 years old

you can build one with all new parts for under 300 anyway

usually can get a better value from techfast, but they don't offer any low-end build atm

        • yep, I want something that will last if I can find a good deal. will keep an eye out at techfast.

  • Are you concerned about running costs? If so then maybe consider a standalone NVR from eBay? You can get a diskless one for cheap and install your own HDD if you have a spare one lying around.

    • In terms of cost I'm lumping it with utility cost of running the house, it is what it is. I'm really after the features available on Blue Iris on the PC.
