Denon AVR-S750H seems to have the same specs as the Denon AVR-X1600H except Audyssey MultEQ on the S750H and Audyssey MultEQ XT (the auto calibration stuff). Can't find another retailer in au for S750H to compare, but X1600H is $1399 rrp.
Denon AVR-S750H has eARC, atmos, 7.2 channels, heos multi room support, etc.

  • Slightly less ooomph than the X1600W (75W v 80W), but you probably wouldn't notice the difference…

that is 75W per channel when you're only using 2 (8ohm) speakers, definitely not when you're using 7 speakers

  • Pity most AV receivers are so crazy high nowadays. They can't fit my cabinet. Only the Sony STR-DH790 can, so have to wait for that to go on special. This Denon is great though.

    • You can try the Denon equivalent Marantz models. They are even shorter than the Sony 790. I have the same height issue and an happy with Marantz.
Edit - Denon and Marantz are the same company

      • They're not the same company, they share the same parent company (together with other brands, potentially including Bowers & Wilkins in the near future)

        • Thanks for the correction. That’s what I meant, just didn’t choose my words well :)

      • I have seen the slimline Marantz, and was looking into that one. But unfortunately it's not very cheap. Great brand however.

I got a bit lucky on that front. I have an older model 1604, which doesn’t do HDCP 2.2, so I was looking at newer ones. Found a 1509 at JB HiFi (RRP $999) - it was the last one (display stock) and I grabbed it for $300.

      • Marantz are great AV receivers but don't usually go on sale like others. Its because they are distributed by a middle company with a markup rather than directly to the retailer.

  • I'm comparing this against the Pioneer VSX-933 for $560 (ebay plus) here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/143162986772 as a 4k+Atmos upgrade from my current 5.1 setup.

Besides wireless rear speakers and eARC, is there anything else the Pioneer is noticeably missing out on?

    • Good question. I was eyeing the same model, but the problem is that it supposedly does not support eARC. What this means is that it is unable to get a high-definition audio signal (e.g. Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD, etc.) from your tv to your receiver. So if you have a smart tv and want to use the apps on the tv (e.g. Netflix, Prime Video, etc.), you will not get high-quality audio, but at best "Dolby Digital 5.1", which is compressed and lossy. That's my issue right now.

Someone suggested that the 933 started supporting eARC after a firmware upgrade. But I have found no further evidence of that being the case. Otherwise I might go for it, despite it being a massive chassis that won't fit my furniture.

FYI, New 2020 models were announced last week. So a few specials may be going around soon if not already

    • They skipped replacing the X1600H (so presumably no upgrade to S750H either) so there might not be a lot of movement at their lower range? Should be good deals coming on X2600H and above though yeah.

      • Could be in for a wait, I read that it was going to be September-October before we down under see the new X_700H models.
