I am selling a ps4 pro and the buyer wants me to ship it to them, nothing seems fishy so far i added extra 20 for shipping and they are going to pay with bank transfer is that safe? once its cleared they cant get it back can they?
I know to wait until its clear to send it once its cleared do they have 7 days to reclaim it or some kind of thing like that? They are using CommBank app

Its safe. try to check and confirm that the bank payment's account name is the same name as the delivery address.

    • awesome idea, thanks

    • i dont think it will show their address though in bank details

name is the best that you can check. not address.

yes if the account has been hijacked

      Bad advice. No 2.

Never use PayPal for any gumtree transactions. Buyer can claim that they didn't authorise the payment and that's the end of it.

Agree, Cash in-hand where Gumtree is concerned, or else the buyer may open a PayPal dispute and get their $ back, and get to keep the item.

Paypal with buyer protection is one of the worst options you can choose. At least choose 'send to a friend' option so there's no fee and the buyer can't open PayPal case.

        • How is Ebay?

If he wants to get his money back he'd have to open a case with PayPal, and usually they listen to both sides of the story. Also, send the package with tracking, so he can't claim he didn't receive the item.

lol you're exposing yourself to the short of the stick and you don't even realise it.
Wouldn't you prefer if buyer was unable to open any case? Because thats the pro of selling via bank transfer. By only accepting Paypal, You're letting a third party (Paypal) to decide whether you should keep the money or not, rather than yourself.

Wait until the money has appeared in your bank. DO NOT accept a receipt from cba app as payment. You can easily schedule a payment and then cancel it but the receipt often won’t show it is a scheduled payment.

Send it with insurance from Australia post and pay extra to insure it for the amount the buyer paid.

    • Many banks now offer instant payment such as OSKO

Honestly, why is this still a question that gets asked? Taking uncessary risk is for chumps. Just sell it to a local person who can pay cash.

    My personal mantra is:
    Local. Pickup. Only.
    Cash. In. Hand. Only.

There is no legitimate reason someone can't pay you in cash when picking up in person.
The chance of being given counterfeit notes is astronomically low.
The chance of being ripped off via paypal or bank transfer is CONSIDERABLY higher. Add in posting the item also and the odds only get worse.

PS4 Pro consoles are in such high demand at the moment, it should not be hard to sell it locally for cash with next to zero risk (unless you live on an island on your own or something).

do they have 7 days to reclaim it or some kind of thing like that? They are using CommBank app

Within 10 days they can report to CBA with a sob story that it was a 'mistaken internet payment'
    https://www.commbank.com.au/guidance/consumer-finance/what-t…

Even if you have written messages, CBA may believe their customer over you. Or it may not be their customer you are talking to, but someone who has hijacked their bank account.

    Cash only.

    • OH wow i did not even know that. how do I return the payment without sending whole new payment?

I feel like these bank transfer gumtree facebook scam questions get posted like every week or so. Basically exact same question, and the answers still the same.

  • Heard of eBay?

    • EBay gets a cut and also, ebay sides with buyer. Could still get potentially screwed when buyer claims item never came or DOA or not as advertised

  • Sell locally and get cash even if it means it takes longer to sell. That way you avoid a litany of problems.

    • agree im doing that now, thanks

As a buyer I have bought quite a few things of marketplace and the sellers were genuine. Was ripped off once when the seller actually gave me a tracking number for some other item. Informed Westpac about the transaction. Said they couldn't do it as I authorised the payment. I would still buy it if the seller seems genuine and has good reviews.
