Large Ultrawide Monitor Recommendations

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my 27" LG 4K monitor (LG 27UD88-W) to a larger one for more screen estate.

Use case: For coding (I build websites, teach others how to etc.). No gaming.

The computer I use is a 2017 15" MacBook Pro. 16GB RAM / Radeon Pro 560 4 GB + Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB.

I did some research and found a few:

  • Dell U3818DW
  • Dell U4919DW
  • LG 43UD79-B
  • SAMSUNG C49RG9

Here's a table from rtings website showing some of these: https://share.getcloudapp.com/o0uvDX46.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions about these or anything similar?

Price is not a concern since I work from home and don't mind spending on something that will help improve my productivity for the next 3-4 years.

I see a LOT of people picking up the CRG9 on /r/ultrawidemasterrace lately. Is likely overkill for coding however, as it's a gaming monitor. All you really need is good contrast ratio, and 75Hz+ refresh.

I picked up an Acer Predator X34P about 2 months ago which serves my purposes just fine (gaming AND coding). I actually couldn't imagine going to a 49" as you'd be turning your head as much as 2x27" 16:9 monitors (which isn't great in my 15+ years coding experience, and about 2 trips annually to physio due to neck pain).

If you need more real estate, you might be better off mounting a second monitor above your ultrawide or if you have an iPad, using screen mirroring/Duet to extend your display to it underneath the ultrawide.

Another thing to consider is that you'll definitely want a very sturdy, very flexible mount for your ultrawide. Most of the cheap mounts will not hold the weight of an ultrawide! I went with this one for mine, and love it - especially for the cable routing.

Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved Monitor: U4919DW SAMSUNG C49RG9. Once you go ultra-wide you never want to go back. I would recommend 40" up. That way you can have Jira or DevOps at 30% and your IDE at 70% with no compromises to the workflow.

I recently bought the Dell 4320Q. It is the same size as the LG43UD79-D. Releases late last year in the US, but was really only available to purchase a month or so back (due to covid delays). It has an adjustable height feature the LG and older Dell 4317Q monitors don't have. This is important since with the height of these monitors you want them as low as possible. Only the 4320Q has this feature.

It is a 4K monitor. So you can have 4 x 1920 x 1080 screens if you want.

It also allows laptops to be charged via USBC.

You can combine it with Dell 24" 1920 x 1200 monitors which allow portrait mode to use vertically for extra real estate on the sides which is what I do.

I spent quite a bit of time looking into these monitors earlier in the year. The charging ability, height adjustment, and distortions on the edges were the weaknesses of the older models.

It is quite a bit more than a LG43UD79-D.

I liked it so much I bought a second one for home.

Combine it with a Dell cashback (there is one today) to get the costs down a bit.

    • To fit the 4320Q plus 2x 24"monitors either side would require a very deep and long desk to fit it all comfortably. I just bought a new stand up desk from Zen Space Desks and they are only around 75cm deep so I'm not sure if I could do a 43" on it. Especially since it is ~65cm high with the stand.

While the 4x 1920x1080p screens would be nice, I think from an ergonomics perspective (when you are using it for 8-10 hours a day) looking up to the top of the screen would be a little bit of a strain (eyes and neck) on anything less than 90cm deep.

    • Do you prefer this setup to the curved 49 inch 5120x1440 models?

    • Thanks. Just ordered a Dell 4320Q for $1315.40.

You haven't mentioned how far you are able to sit and read away from your monitors. I'm inclined to agree with the first comment, 49" could be too large. My 35" setup.

    • The desk I use is 90cm (about 3 ft) deep.

Are you working out of a closet? I'm getting claustrophobia, RSI and leg cramps just looking at that pic!

        • It's an inbuilt desk in my rental (but yes it's the same depth as the closet). It's a tenkeyless keyboard otherwise the ergonomics would be terrible :)

          • @Lukian: I'd put that vertical monitor above the acer, and have two landscape above (unless you code)

Be careful on the Dells the Macbooks USB-C doesn't work well with them, do some research on that
