[Solved] Large Tree with Blueberry Like Fruit Sydney

Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden confirmed it's a plum pine or Illawarra plum - an Australian native. The fruits are edible. They even had seedlings to sell.

These trees are fruiting like crazy in Sydney's North Shore.

Does anyone know what they are?

PS: I was trying to identify it with Plantnet without luck when an old couple sitting nearly asked if the fruits were edible. I said wait until I come back to you.

      Sorry, uploaded.

How long are they going to wait?

How long is it going to take the OZB community to identify the bloody plant?

Well it's pretty dark out there now, and it must be cold….

  • Could it be blueberry ash? With fruits like this

If yes, according to this article, they are edible.

Blueberry ash fruit is dark blue in colour and is a stone fruit of small size (7 mm) and light weight (0.2 g). However, it has a high portion of flesh (60% of fruit weight), which is edible and can be a potential source of phytochemicals.

But I would be hesitant to eat any unless there is absolute confirmation of the plant, and that they are safe.

    • Pic uploaded. Doesn't look like blueberry ash.

      • Could it be Inkberry - a native shrub? Info here. But a shrub is not a big tree. So maybe not.

The leaf resembles an olive leaf. Ripened olives can be dark blue/purple.
Can you upload a pic of the tree?

        • Uploaded trunk. Don't think it's an olive tree.

How long you going to make them wait? They haven't got long…

  • What does it look like inside? Maybe Fig https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elaeocarpus_angustifolius

    • No, too blue; inside like a blueberry; also leaves thinner and no red leaves.

Post some better photos to the NSW native plant identification group on Facebook.

  • Got anymore pics of the fruit? It's hard to tell by that photo.. Are they hard/soft? Seeds? Squash one open.

  • Leaves… Resolution not great but maybe… Blueberry ash tree?

Pretty sure it's Plum Pine Podocarpus Elatus.

    • Looks pretty close. Will try to verify.

    • Thanks for the identification. Spot on.

      • No problem, I used to spend some time around Chatswood.

  • Could be privet. Berries look similar, but are are mildly toxic. However, trunk looks too big. Blueberry scrubs grow to around 4m in height.

    • Leaves too broad.

  • It could be privet, see link below, which has pictures

    https://www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au/Waste_Environment/Bushlan…

    • Leaves too broad.

  • Email pics to your local Botanic Gardens. They will give you a firm ID pretty quick. Part of your taxes in action.
Please let us know when you find out. 😀
