  • If someone in willing to splash out $2.8k for a gaming config, wouldn't it make sense to get both a gaming desktop and a cheaper laptop and it will work out cheaper?

    • Do you think those who sell these products cant think of this?

    • +1

If that setup works for you then it is absolutely better to do the gaming desktop and regular laptop combo. But there are a lot of scenarios where a good gaming laptop is more practical than a desktop and there are some people who just want one computer rather than two. Plus this one effectively comes with it's own high end gaming display.

What about gaming on the go? I occasionally game in our work cafe and certainly can't do that with a basic laptop and a gaming desktop sitting at home.

      • gaming at work? lol?

        • Whats wrong with it? We play game everyday at work during lunch break (even with my boss).

    • People have different needs and wants. Simple as that.

I really like this, especially the screen. Only let down would be the lack of Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    • Cannot find anything close for the $

      Direct from Asus as well.

I don't use TB3 but the only downside I can see is the 9th gen cpu but 10th gen has only seen single digit increases.

      • Yeah I don't think this CPU would be much of a bottleneck for many games really. My thinking was more around "future proofing" the graphics by means of an eGPU.

        https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Laptops-&-Notebooks/Lapt…

Has TB, a better 240Hz screen, better battery. Comes with a 2060 rather than 2070 (~5% difference) and half the storage, but it is also slightly cheaper

Just be careful of that one

The MSI P65 Creator 9SF offers limited maintenance options. While the bottom cover is easy to remove after loosening all the screws, users will only have direct access to the Wi-Fi module once inside. The SSD seems to be positioned below the main board and cannot be reached without taking apart the entire device. The RAM cannot be exchanged or expanded - but at least the cooling fans are easy to reach for cleaning purposes.

@RedBret: I'm running a MSI Prestige 15 which is a reasonable device IMO. It's very slim but does run a little warm. The GTX 1650 Max Q isn't the most powerful but is enough to run most games.

Best of all it does have TB3 and can run a eGPU. Running one at home as we speak and the laptop barely runs above idle temps during gaming.

            • @sghetti: Thanks mate, going to pull the trigger on one or the other tonight.

Have a HP reverb that I am going to run with it so I am not sure if a 2060 will do that.

        • Does the tb3 on the msi laptops support power delivery? I've always understood that tb3 should encompass all advanced features of a port selection (ie. usb3.2 gen2, display port, power delivery, and tb3 itself), but I've found that a lot of laptops don't actually support PD even though it features a tb3 port, which is a little annoying as the specs sometimes doesn't make this clear

          • +1

@tlc72: The Prestige 15 definitely does. I've got it plugged in to a eGPU with one cable to USB-C, charges and everything.

            • @sghetti: nice, is your's fhd/4k and how much? I just had a look through the specs and the fhd fits my criteria, now just waiting for that irresistible deal

    • Apparently the screen only runs to 280 nits, which is pretty dismal (but high refresh screens are known to run dim). Worth being aware - 240hz is pretty cool but I'd take 120hz and 400nits any day so it can be used in bright rooms.

EDIT: Turns out 280 is for the 144hz screen, can't seem to find brightness for this one

Buy Zephyrus G14 with Ryzen 4800, 16gb Ram instead for 2199. Has Geforce gtx1650 though

    • +1

Graphics wise, that's a big step down.

    • Surely you can do better than that for $2200

1.93KG on a laptop with an RTX 2070 is pretty amazing

    • Yeah, but that's why reviews complain it runs hot

      • Yea… I haven't really checked out the reviews… I just saw the 1.93KG on the spec sheet and figured that it would be pretty decent - I wasn't looking at this for myself, was just hoping through deals on OzBargain :)

@[Deactivated]: Last one is still an RTX2070, what are you on about?

              • -4

@FireRunner: not maxQ but full version. if you have no idea about those things please do not post nonsense

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: I know the difference, so it’s a typo in your original comment. That’s all you had to say. No need to get so angry. A full 2070 and full 2080 is a big difference which is why everyone was wondering how you got yours for this price

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: You talked about a FULL 2080, none of the links you showed have a 2080 in them… Pot kettle.

@sghetti: i said read and i gave you a link

in that link there is a discussion

in that discussion there are details

nevermind im not going to help anyone anymore, i dont care, buy whatever you want, waste your money however you want, none of my business

  • Which is more bamg for the buck this or g14 rtx 4900hs?

For future proof + gaming + photoshop + portability.

    Need your recommendation. TIA

  • Really great laptop, I use it for work, beautiful to type on compared to other laptops I've used in the past. FYI screen is 60hz when not plugged into the wall + I think the 2070 either doesn't run or tanks pretty hard when not plugged in. Not unwieldy atall considering like some other 'gaming' laptops

    • Thanks, what spec do you have?

Looking at the Asus website cannot work out if it is the max q for certain…

      https://www.asus.com/ROG-Zephyrus-M-GU502-Studio-Edition/

Also is that a good price?

      • Ah my bad, I don't have the exact same spec, it's the GX502 rather than GU502, so mine is not the max-q version, just a 2070 mobile but everything else is the exact same from what I can tell. I think the GU is max-q and the GX is non max-q? But even this article says that the GU doesn't have a 2070:

        https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/asus-zephyrus-s-gx502-f…

I think work bought it for ~$3300 from PLE so this is a pretty decent price, I'd buy it again myself if I had to at this price :)

Just for reference - Dell did similar laptop but 512GB instead of 1TB for $2080 in March.

  • It's a great machine! But imho MSI Stealth GS65 (2019 refreshed model) is still way better because:
    1. Adjustable fan curve - EXTREMELY important if you want to tweak around cpu and gpu performance
    2. Much better thermals
    3. Lighter and thinner - 1.75cm & 1.89kg for GS65
    4. Much larger battery - 82Whr from MSI vs 52Whr from Asus
    5. Free 10% performance gain from 80w to 90w gpu bios flash, because of its thermal headroom

How can you go wrong with Hardware Unbox's most recommended model?

    • Any deals on them?

      • You'll prob have to watch the price on Amazon really really closely as they tend to frequently throw in deals for a few hours / days then pull them back.

I know one gs65 rtx2080 model went as low as $2800 about a month ago but it only lasted for a few hours and now it's back to full price of $4599.
