MSI GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB GAMING X TRIO Video Card $939.00 + Delivery + 1% Surcharge for PayPal and VISA @ ShoppingExpress

250

Hello! I have been tracking the price of this graphics card for a while now, and this is the lowest it has been locally since the pandemic began.

It has definitely been much cheaper (details below) before the pandemic, and this is still at the higher end of pre-COVID prices. However, I thought I'd post this because those who would consider buying this RTX card probably have very specific needs (high-end cooler, quiet operation, unobtrusive RGB), and may consider this a deal given the current situation.

IMPORTANT notes on Shopping Express checkout
  • Unfortunately, I found out that there is a 1% surcharge for a PayPal and credit card payments; while I understand, I personally think it's kind of poop because I don't like bad surprises at checkout. I'm not sure what kind of buyer protections there are for electronic transfers (ETs) these days (probably none), so proceed with caution if you choose to pay by ET. There is also zip, which apparently requires, which does not incur a surcharge; but I can't comment on it because I don't use zip.
  • By default, the checkbox related to signature on delivery is checked, but it means it doesn't require a signature. I find that default rather counter-intuitive.
Other considerations

These are just my opinions base on my observation and that I thought I'd share in case it's useful to someone else. Please take them with a healthy dose of salt, and I'm not responsible for any decisions that you make base on my comments.

  • You can probably afford to wait if you are just upgrading, and you don't have the aforementioned special needs and/or need it to make a living with.
  • GPU prices appear to be slowly coming down, which coincides with the pandemic easing a bit around the world and is consistent with reports about supplies slowly getting back to normal. Current prices for RTX cards are still obscenely high compared to pre-COVID prices.
  • The RTX 30 series will apparently be announced in the coming months. That could be a reason to wait for better prices, but keep in mind that some say that you may be waiting until next year.
  • I haven't looked at other RTX 2070 Supers in the same tier too closely; but I did come across the ASUS ROG Strix Advanced on Amazon going for ~$935 last week. Stock was gone by the time I got the chance to sit down to post about it.
  • Please see chepsk8's comment regarding 5700 XT as an alternative, provided that you don't need an Nvidia card for software compatibility reasons.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

AUD against USD has recovered, prices should be much lower for a upper-mid range card

Given what happened to FTC and their eBay store (history of order delays and cancellation, and I believe they went into liquidation?), they may not necessarily be the best point of comparison.

Great effort on the post though!

The RX 5700 XT is Currently 630 on Amazon and is generally on par if not slightly faster or slower than a 2070 super depending on the game, so unless you're interested in Ray Tracing orany other NVIDIA exclusive features i'd say the 5700 XT is well worth a look instead.

    • +2

This comes with 100% Local warranty and support which I would think is a better deal considering the amount of issues and RMA's that occur with 5700xt series cards.

If you're going to spend $630 on a card, I would first make sure you are covered if for whatever reason it decides to give you black screens and you are out of Amazon's return window - as I know for a lot of Amazon US buys, you are not covered by standard AUS warranties that you would normally get if you simply bought it from a Aussie retailer.

Local warranty suck for computer items, amazon warranty much better

  • What's the difference in specs between this and, say, EVGA Geforce 2070 super? (eg https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Graphics-Cards/NVIDIA/77…)

Are they the same product, different packaging? Why are there so many different brands and names?

    • +5

Most manufacturers such as EVGA/ MSI/ etc all buy the standard or sometimes a shorter version of the same GPU and board from Nvidia.
They then tinker with the board and slap on their own cooler.
The result is usually some minor performance differences and sometimes large cooling performance.
It pays to watch a few Youtube videos to see which cards are better out of the lot if you are genuinely interested this late into the RTX2070 product cycle.
For example, just MSI alone will have Evoke, Gaming X, Mech OC, etc just for one card.
Generally the cheapest models get the worst cooler where they skim on some heatsinks for the VRM, RAM or sometimes inadequent thermal pads.

      • Thanks, that's helpful! I'm going to guess that for my purposes it probably doesn't matter. I push it but not that hard.

I have this card after posting the $719 deal and it is an absolute beast and comfortably runs all games at 1440p 144hz on high settings.
Anyone looking at it, note the length - It must be one of the longest cards going around at 29.7cm.
    Some cases will have issues.

I really wished people stop quoting FTC's deal as a reference since that won't happen again (most likely) given how unstable those deals were

    • +1

Agreed, Great for those that got the deals (i did a full 3700x/2070 Super build at crazy prices) but they won't happen again.
It wasn't and isn't sustainable for retailers - I have no clue what they were thinking.

    • Thank you for pointing this out, I have only been looking at computer parts again since about two months ago. I did have a passing thought that the FTC deals seem abnormal, but decided to include the reference in the end only because FTC seems to keep coming up here. I honestly wasn't aware of how problematic FTC deals are as references. :(

Sort of but not really. They're cheaper (by $9 & $40, respectively) and that's about it.
If LTT is to believed, both cards run a lot hotter than OP's. Also the clock speeds are slightly lower than OP's.

      • -2

Have to factor in delivery cost also.

I doubt they run hotter than the MSI card.

        • +3

The Galax cards do run hotter. If it was only $30-$40 difference (and case/motherboard permit) I would definitely get the Gaming X Trio for better aesthetic and build quality and slightly better clock/temp/noise.

      • The MSI also has far better build quality and software and features. E.g. the Fans can stop completely on the MSI when not needed = zero noise, longer life, and just cooler :D

      • LTT doesnt do in depth testing or multiple manufacturers anymore, no idea where you got this information from.

    • The Galax 2 fan is $830 (3 fan $840) + deliver from the same shop as this Gaming X Trio. I wouldn't pay $100+ more for basically the same gaming performance, can always overclock + undervolt + custom fan curve to bring good balance between performance/temp/noise.

  • Hurry up and drop already

  • I got an awesome deal for this card in late November 2019 paid $730 or $770 AUD. One word of advice make sure your motherboard and case can support the size of this thing. It is really big, on my motherboard it extends over my mobo and I had to move around some of my SATA cables.

  • Considering all these idiots who keep posting rrp deals of switches a post like this is fine mate 👍 thanks for taking the time for a decent write up too !

  • +1

Upvoted just for the detailed writeup and the efforts taken to do the research.

    • Yeah I know. If everyone posted their deals with this much information ozbargain would be a more civil place lol
