External HDD keeps "reading"

Hi all,

I have a new 10TB Seagate external drive that I use to store Plex media on.

For some reason the HDD is constantly making the "reading" noise and the blue indicator LED flashing, even though no media is being played. I've just restarted the PC to see if that solved it but unfortunately it hasn't.

I'm running Windows 10. There are no system files stored on the HDD. It's 100% media.

If anyone has any tips on how to get it to relax I'd appreciate it :)

  • Format (insert drive letter here):*. *

  • Windows 10 might be doing a defrag in the background, especially if it happens when there's no activity on the disk for a while.

Check Task Manager and see what process is causing the most disk activity.

how to get it to relax

Put some Enya MP3s on the drive.

  • Step one I would recommend to plug it into something else a different computer television etc
Something could be causing your computer to constantly try to index the data

Many years back I purchased 2x3 TB external western digital drives one of them had this problem it would not stop indexing even though it was brand-new and pretty much empty needless to say I took it back for a replacement

If you're running Plex from it Plex is probably doing maintenance stuff in the background E.G scanning for new media

  • windows probably indexing the drive for faster search.
    i doubt its Plex
    or defrag

  • I would assume the external drive is not a RAID drives? RAID drives tend to do parity check/maintenance between itself.

If not, perhaps plex doing a library maintenance or windows doing a defrag or anti virus doing a virus scan

How about if you restart and monitor processes using procmon

  • Thanks guys. I've shut down Plex and the clicking noise is still continuing. Task Manager doesn't show anything suspicious either. I restarted the PC and it hasn't fixed it unfortunately. I'll leave the PC on overnight and see if it's still doing it in the morning. The HDD only has 1TB of data on it atm so any indexing/defrag etc shouldn't take this long.
