3D Printer Recommendations

Bought my Dad a 3D printer Dec 2018. (Any cube i3) and he loves it, was a xmas present and wasn't sure if he'd use it much, great hobby without power tools in his older age,
However, in that time, he's replaced the hot bed, numerous nozzles and now the mother board has fried itself.

Looking for recommendations on an upgrade 3D printer.

Want something that's going to last and hopefully better than the anycube I3 he had.

  • Why don't you use the old 3D printer to print yourself a new printer?

  • I have Ender 3 for 12 months or more and had no problems. Was cheap but prints well for the price. I think they have improved them since I got mine too.

    • Thanks for your reply, do you have the pro or base model/standard version?

  • This is definitely a 'Sit back and watch with a bowl of popcorn' topic…

    My personal experience only:
Purchased an Artillery Sidewinder X1 for Christmas.
Loved it, printed everything perfect… for a while
Then nozzles started clogging, the bed stopped behaving (prints weren't sticking anymore)
Hotend and sensors started having problems.
Had to order a heap of replacement parts Mid Feb (bad timing) that took 8 weeks to get here.
Still in pieces waiting for me to put back together.

In retrospect, I would definitely consider going with one of the Ender family in the future. If only due to the parts availability etc.

What I've noticed as well is that cheap ($19/25) rolls of PLA/PLA+ (from eBay etc) arent nearly as good as paying for a quality brand.

On the positive side of the Sidewinder equation, a fairly low entry co$t for a 300x300 capable/quality printer.
Awesome group support (FB) and manufacturers support.

Would like to hear where you end up…

    • Thanks for your reply. Dad loves his printer and as a hobby that's quieter and safer than using power tools, mum's happy as well.
I didn't know he'd enjoy it or use it as much as he does, so I'd like to get something decent and good quality and replace his broken one.

  • CR-10s Pro

    • Thanks. I'll go look at that make/model as recommended.

      • Please note that you need to change the auto bed leveling sensor immediately for it to be consistent on the CR-10S pro and you will always need to be upgrading parts on a 3d printer. They always need tinkering.

ender 3 or CR-10S are pretty awesome imo

  • Ender 3 is probably the best for a hobbyist. If you're not getting the Pro version you might do well getting a glass plate along with it.

I actually recommend this store. I bought mine from them and it arrived pretty fast. They've also been good with after sale support.

    • Amazon have the Creality Ender 3 Pro at $479. (Non pro at $399)
Given how much he enjoys tinkering and printing stuff, I'd likely go for a pro version or a top tier level model.

I'm sure his AnyCube has a glass hot bed?

      • Aurarum AU HAS Ender 3 Pro for $379 and ender 3 v2 for $500 I think or $449

        • Good catch if you live in Melbourne. Shopping about 55$ otherwise.

  • There is a guy selling an original prusa on gumtree in Perth for 600. I would say that you should definately jump on that. These are the benchmark for most consumer 3d printers these days.

  • Seems to be the best price i could find and just purchased.

    • +2

      Thanks
I'd just bought the Ender 3 Pro at $399.

Although there was a posting last night I saw for a bigger bed at $638 from Banggood also.
