Slightly different squealing/whining problem in Ford AU Falcon

I have an old Ford AU that makes a whistling/whining noise while running. It doesn't seem to be the belt or one of the pulleys as once the engine is turned off and the pulley stop turning, the noise continues and dies out for approximately the next 1 second. There are no obvious vacuum leaks but of course there could be a common trouble spot somewhere out of sight.

The engine is quite loud making it hard to guesstimate the origin of the noise but I would say maybe towards the centre of the block.

Has anyone got any tips? encountered something similar?

Check for inlet manifold gasket blown out, normally at cylinder 1.

squealing/whining problem in Ford AU Falcon

Simple, leave the Mrs at home

    • Or install better sound insulation in the boot

  • Are you sure it isn't a pulley issue? I've seen this sort of thing with worn out alternators.

  • Cracked PCV? Scratch that, it was a cracked brake booster valve I was thinking of.

  • Can you take a video of the engine running and moving the camera around the engine bay to try and isolate the noise?

  • Temporarily remove all the pulley belts to confirm 100% that it's not caused by anything belt driven and then, using a long screwdriver or other metal object against the motor and your ear, like a stethoscope, see if you can pin down where the noise is coming from.
