  • may i know what exactly does this do that this doesn't

    • Bugger all! I have owned both a Nest Cam and Kasa Pan Tilt Indoor and the Kasa was hands down better in quality and everything! However I used a Google Hub to watch the cam feed as a baby monitor, Kasa would stream to it but stop after 10mins which became annoying.

The nest can stream indefinetely but theres a huge lag 10-30seconds easily. I chose the Nest but yeah would go back to Kasa once that time out issue was sorted

      • I only got nest cam and love it even more now with one price multiple cameras subscription. I don't experience huge lag I get between 2 to 5 second lag which is acceptable in my opinion.

      • 10-30 seconds lag? Why would you bother using it for a baby monitor then. What is perplexing about these things is that they cost so much more than a dedicated baby monitor with a dedicated screen (which cost about $100 on Amazon) yet they perform really badly as a baby monitor.

        • Tp-link Kasa Spot camera at $58 bucks is the best baby camera hands down.
The app is ultra fast to load, no extra cost for subscriptions( yet) can show on the smart screen.

    • I don't have a TP-Link camera so I can't compare the quality base on the similar descriptions.

I'll bought the Nest Cam IQ month a go for $299 to replace my Vimtag camera. So far what I tell you the good things about Nest Cam IQ is:

      Supersight:

Automatically zooms in and follows a person's movements, while still showing you the full picture in crystal-clear video.

      Facial Recognition: (Subscription Required)

You will get notification when someone that you know or someone that you don't know in Activity Zones.

      HD Talk and listen audio:

Tested and it's crystal clear compared to my old Vimtag.

      24/7 CVR: (Subscription Required)

I don't have to worry about the failed SD card that's happened to my old Vimtag.
P.S. 24/7 CVR used about 7GB+ of data daily and you better have good upload speed like 5Mbps+.

    • Hi. Have you ever tried out this camera? Do you think it's ok?

      • I only tried Xiaomi, Vimtag and Nest cameras. But the Orion camera looks very similar to my old Vimtag.

The only thing that Vimtag beat Nest IQ is the Pan and tilt function.

Why does every camera seem to have an overpriced subscription service?

    • Because you could be generating 7GB a day. With facial recognition, alerts, and more - the costs are relatively small in comparison.

    • +3

      Because investors/shareholders like recurring revenue.

    • No subscription required with Eufy. I just got their door bell camera and it’s pretty great so far.

Why would one not buy Nest Hub Max instead of this which seem to have more functionality. What does this provide that Nest Hub Max doesn't?

    • +1

Better IR, easier to place (smaller size), 4k Digital zoom (4k sensor but 1080p video).

  • why this worth 249?

  • I've you're a bit geeky, check out the various Raspberry Pi security camera systems that can record to a NAS. Cheaper to buy and no subscriptions.

  • I bought the below camera from ebay. For <$50 I think it's great. Primarily used as a baby monitor and sometimes a dog monitor. Can record to SD or cloud (subscription required).
Only downside is you sometimes need to close and reopen the app to get the video to load to 100%.

My 2 cents after having had cheaper cameras such as Xiaomi and Foscam ptz as well as using blue iris and a dedicated local storage.

I debated between this and the hikvisions and ended up with 2 outdoor iq and 1 nest max hub and a nest hello doorbell. With the new subscription, it's 'cheap' now with 4 devices.

    Benefits
    1) software is a lot more reliable compared to Xiaomi or other providers esp for zone detection and facial recog. A lot quicker using the app when not at home too.
    2) cloud storage is my preferred option after a break in that resulted in them smashing the cameras and any electronic box that thought was local storage Inc my NBN box. Hopefully in a similar scenario, they would have been uploaded.
    3) Google customer service and warranty Vs other unknown providers
    4) had two breakins with cheaper cameras and they don't do anything for the cops even in full hd as they're not clear enough to get a face. With nest hello, I've been able to get number plates.

    • This has been my experience as well. I bought many Xiaomi cameras, but the software was so unreliable, and not intuitive.

Tried a PoE Hikvision, but it's just such a hassle to run the server and software yourself. If I expanded the set up, it would have cost more than the Nest.

My issue has always been the price differential between US and Australia nest cameras, but now on special its so much more acceptable!

      • I just bought mine from the US.. you can't get the IQ versions of the outdoor and equivalent nest hello here in Aust

  • Thanks op, ordered.

From TGG you'll also get a $40 store credit if buying one camera ($240+ eligible items including this cam), or $80 for two or more ($380+ eligible items). Store Credit expires in 7 days from receiving it on 1 July, and the promotion finishes on 17 June. Details are on the cam's product page.
