Recommendations for 2-in-1 Laptops

Hey guys, I am a newbie in this field and will definitely appreciate as many opinions from those who are experienced in this. So, I am basically looking for a 2-in-1 laptop, mainly for these few purposes:

From the highest priority to the least priority
1. Data Analysis
2. Coding
3. Note-taking
4. Watching Movie
5. Light gaming

For light gaming, I am not sure whether the graphics card from these laptops is good enough for the game (please enlighten me on this), but here is the recommended system requirement by the game:
NvidiaGTX950 or above.

The specs I am looking for are generally:
1. 8GB Ram
2. 512GB SSD
3. I5 or I7 (Will it matter much in my case?)
4. FHD resolution is good enough
5. Windows 10 Home 64

As I am a student, I have student discounts for some of the brands, so far I have checked the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, Lenovo Yoga C940 (14"), and HP Spectre X360 13". If you have any other 2-in-1 laptops to recommend, then please do so.

So far HP is offering 30% student discount on their HP Spectre x360, while Dell and Lenovo are offering a 15% discount on those laptops I mentioned. I am not in a rush to purchase them and if there is a deal that you think I should wait for, then please let me know. Thank you so much!!

  • I have an older model of the Lenovo Yoga and it has been rock solid for 2 years now, best laptop build quality I have had by a long shot. I'm not a fan of Dell in terms of build quality/reliability so I'd have them at the bottom of the pecking order. Haven't personally owned an HP, but I do like the look of some of the new 2-in-1s, but can't see me replacing the Lenovo any time soon!

  • +1

I have the C940 and I love it, although the failure of the Thunderbolt interface to do its job properly drives me nuts. I am on my fourth dock of different brands and models and I'm ready to conclude that the C940 is going to make it impossible to get my dream setup of plugging into the dock for monitor, charge and others in one cable. I even had the $320 recommended Lenovo dock and it was pretty much the worst experience of them all. This is my second C940 as the first one stopped charging. I would also like to note that it's a bitch to put back together if you plan on upgrading the SSD like I did. The back plate is held on with a bunch of tiny plastic clips that snap when you remove it. Aside from these grievances I actually really like it. If the new XPS works better with docks I would choose it over this though.

    • Hey mate, I use Dell D6000 with my C940. Works flawlessly with two QHD screens, ethernet, keyboard, mouse and it charges well. If you haven’t tried that model give it a go.

      • thanks for the recommendation. I have tried a couple of cheaper eBay/Amazon ones, the Lenovo, another high end model (can't remember the brand) and I'm currently on a HP G2 120W. I have had a range of issues, mostly around not being able to connect once the laptop goes to sleep. The HP has been one of the best but it never re-connects after sleep (need to disconnect, toggle monitor power and reconnect and hope that it works) and sometimes lately requires PC restart. Can you resume from sleep with the monitor output?

        • Yeap I can. I can press any key on my external keyboard and mouse and it wakes up. I just get it out of my bag pack (the laptop is sleeping) and connect USB C without opening my laptop, press a key and it wakes up. Or, I go for a lunch break (while it is charging) and it’s sleeping and I press a key and it wakes up instantly.

          • @lookingforTV: that sounds amazing. Who would have thought it would take six docks to achieve! I'm ordering one now :-)

  • I would say you probably don't need the i7 over the i5. I would go for 16 GB RAM to future-proof it and that probably means you'll end up with an i7 model. Definitely consider a touchscreen - I couldn't live without it.
