These can sound pretty ordinary without a firmware update, depending in the version yours ships with.

I actually reckon these don’t really live up to hype without a subwoofer unit.

      Firmware update? I'll try this.
This was my experience too. If anyone is buying this primarily for movies and tv then you'll likely want a subwoofer to go with it. If you just want sound bigger than what your tv can output then this will do.

Agree about these being so hyped here. Bought the YAS 108 and the bass is worse than a $100 bluetooth speaker

i have yas 107 and bass is enough for me for some reason.

    • Recommended subwoofer for this?

Firmware update - i never even considered that. My 108b was on version 4.0, is now on 9.0 - unsure what improvements there are but can't hurt.
      Thanks!

How do you update the firmware??

        • +1

Google yas108b firmware update. You download the file and put it on USB then plug in USB into the back. Hold down vol down and power. 5 mins later done

          • @garvani: Thank you
            Did a firmware update.
Hopefully I can hear some improvement coming from v5.00 to v9.00

similar price to google home max , how does this compares ?

  • Alternate view…
These are great for elderly and hard of hearing when using the "Clear Voice" feature or a good way to add wireless headphones to a TV.
Can be a good uplift to a TV speaker without taking up much space.

I have a YAS108 which I think is pretty awesome for the price (I got it for $135). I understand this is the updated version of that.

The YAS108 definitely fills a room up with sound compared to TV speakers. Does it have the bass of a full system with separate subwoofer… of course not, but it does a decent job. People need to weigh up their needs vs the cost.

    • Even the treble on my YAS108 is terrible.

      • Its honestly not that bad, update the firmware and use clear voice does make it better.
or u can get better sound by spending a crap tone on some KRK speakers :)

KRK ROKIT 5 G3 have been as low as $314 Delivered for a pair during sale.

Which is below $349 retail price of YAS-109 so I would call it ‘extra’ rather than a ‘crap tonne’ more than this YAS-109 deal.

          • @thebadmachine: no one told u to go for the cheaper lineups lol

@sushimaster: I got the YAS-106 for ~$130 instead of bookshelf speakers back in the day because it was cheaper & had more ‘watts’.

I eventually upgraded to budget bookshelf speakers and realised what I was missing.

      • I eventually realised my two YAS108 were pretty on par with my TV speakers, was able to sell them on Gumtree/FB for $200/$220. Good time to sell them if you're not liking them. :P

    • I got it from TGG for pretty much the same price when they had an Ebay sale, like the simple form factor of the soundbar, but I have it connected to my old 5.1 system sub for the bass. Going to try the firmware updates mentioned here to get some better sound out of it.

  • would this be good for connecting to and playing spotify music? Already have a HT system, wondering if this would make a good outdoor sound system for the backyard.

    • I had bought a YAS108 once primarily for music. Very muddy sound, and my one was sibilant too.

Edifiers bookshelf speakers sound much better (and are much cheaper), but depends on how big your backyard is I guess.

      • Thanks! I'll look out for a deal!

  • Got the 108 connected to Emotiva S10 subwoofer. A bit overkill but sounds pretty good.

    • i have mine connected to a Polk DSW PRO 660 - ya overkill BUT sounds good :)

  • Sooo…. Is this a good buy for a backyard Spotify speaker? Or should I hold out for another soundbar deal?

    • It is a fairly cheap all in one speaker but if it is just for music i wouldn't

      • Thanks for the advice. I'll keep looking!
