Buying from Family/Friends - What Bargains Have You Scored?

I've always been a supporter of buying used from family friends instead of Gumtree/eBay/Facebook.

My recent bargain has been a 2007 Camry Altise with 87k km, new tyres, rego till December, one owner, full-service history all for $5500.

They upgraded to a BMW 3 Series and being our first car, didn't want to spend too much, we were happy with the test drive and decided to haggle a little further down from $6k to $5.5k

I'm curious what other OzBargainers have been able to scoop up from family friends for a deal that has left both sides feeling like a win-win.

I don't sell anything to friends or family.

For something to be a bargain for the buyer, the seller is usually getting the sour end of a deal. Or vice versa. I rather not involve friends in that.

I think the exception is when getting rid of something that you're basically giving away and don't mind the loss on.

I don't sell to friends or family as they'll expect to get it for next to nothing as they are family/friends.

Also they'll want me to fix anything that breaks for free and be available 24/7 to answer any questions they have about the item.

  • A speed ball, all it cost was sex.

In seriousness though don't mix buying and relationships. Never do business with anyone you couldn't tell to go (profanity) themselves.

        Yes.

  • Mate got a 2017 Bianchi Nirone with upgraded Saddle and pedals, and a modified cassette, plus 3 sets of cleats, all for $500. Granted the bike was secondhand, but was almost brand new. He got it from a work colleague's husband.

  • My preferred way of obtaining second hand goods is from hard rubbish. Have picked up quite a few items that I use regularly!

  • I sold my mother my old laptop and it suddenly decided to have massive bizarre problems that were a headache to figure out. Never again, would rather have sold to a stranger and let them deal with it

You sold something to your mother? I thought I was tight lol.

      • Well i was doing her a favour. Could have sold it to a random for $1000 but sold it to her for $500. She needed it for her job. The new one I bought was $2k so it would have been a bit too expensive to just give it to her

          Still, it's your mum.

          • @brendanm: Well if I didn't she would have had to buy a new one otherwise as I wouldn't have been able to afford to buy myself a new one and she would have ended up with something really crappy….

            • +3

@Quantumcat: Sounds like she did anyway haha.

              • @brendanm: It was fine it just didn't like being reset (my data being cleared to set up as a new PC) - the start menu disappeared. Reinstalled windows and it was fine.

Haggling with friends over prices? Yeah I’ll pass thanks

    • Yea, this is so awkward. Best I managed to do was expected eBay sale price minus fees which is pretty reasonable imo.

I get the money I was expecting and my friend get's it cheaper.

Best way to get rid of 'friends'

The biggest thing that I've ever bought from a mate is half a house. He had gambling debts and one day , he got hit by a train- these 2 things may or may not be linked. His house , a 2 bedroom, 2 baths unit , went to his only child who was living with him at the time and had just turned 18. His insurance refused to pay out and the bank came clamoring for their 50% of the house. Our mortgage was with the same bank and my wife and I were able to strike a deal with them and we became the owner of half a house. The years went by and my mate's daughter went to uni , graduated top of her class and got her dream job :)Last year, she bought us out, for more than we were expecting.

Got a mate who is internet clueless before he got married used to get me to order him stuff online i'd always do it but sometimes i would add a few things for myself

not really a 'bargain' because i was doing him a favour initially but when he kept asking me to do it for him i used it to my advantage for a couple bucks back from cashrewards and free shipping on additional items i'd order as well at Qantas FFP etc

As for family i wouldnt deal with family when it comes to money esp mine - i generally just give hand me down things to them for free ie old phone to mum, old car to brother in law etc but most of my family it struggling financially and im a little bit more comfortable

  • There's always strings attached when dealing with money and friends/family.
