Robot Vacuum Path Tracing into Carpets

So I can't find any posts about this, thought I might start my own to get others experience.

I have a Gen 1 Xiaomi Robot vacuum still going strong after 3+ years use.

We've been in our new place now for 2 years and started noticing after the 1st year some faint tracing of tracks caused by the wheels of the robot along the outer edge of the wall of all carpeted rooms.

It didn't bother us too much, but now another year on they are quite noticeable and I feel this will only become more prominent over time.

So, let's break this down into two parts to see if anyone has advice:
1. Prevention
2. Restoration

Note: Our Vacuum is scheduled to run every morning Mon-Fri.

  • Steam your carpet.

    • Out of interest, have you tried this on your carpet caused by the same tracks? Or rather you just know steaming might help?

      • Was thinking about iron method but there are a few

      • We got these really bad in a previous house, and the professional carpet clean when we left didn't get rid of them.

We are now in our new place and I've decided to stop using it as even after 2 months I could start to see them.

Am considering buying a new model one, as they have been amazing and I want one to use on our hard wood floors.

  • I have those too but it is a single track which makes me think it's caused by the spinning brush. It looks kinda decorative. I like it.

    • After the first year I thought it looked okay. But now it's much more prominent and I want to reduce/remove it, hence the post.

  • Do you get a lot of error 5 running it on carpet?

We just got a gen 1 a month or two ago and at least 5 times per clean on carpet it will stop and say error 5. Upon inspection there is nothing blocking the brush.

We just force it to keep going using the app but it's still annoying.

    • Nope, never got that error sorry. Strange.

    • +1

My Gen 1 is about 3 years old (maybe more), and I am getting lots of error 5 with no blockages, just press the button and it goes again.

I either thought it was one of the brush parts I've had to replace, or the type of carpet. But has happened in 2 houses now with different types of carpet.

      • Ours has done it since day 1, brand new out of the box. I believe it's a common issue but it's pretty annoying.

We just press the button to force it to keep going too, but if there is no blockage then why is there an error?

        • Most be even older than 3 years. Maybe 5. Never happened for ages while the first house had wooden floors only.

          • @kulprit: Yeh i reckon it's a carpet thing

            • @meowmeowmeow: Worries me as I am happy to buy a newer model, but not if it does the same thing

              • @kulprit: I believe the newer models can handle carpet better so maybe it's not an issue for those. This is our first robot vacuum so I didnt want to spend $600 on the newer one. I think we will soldier on with this one and get a newer one in a couple years time.

I did just submit a support request to Kogan, ours has done it since day 1 so just verifying if ours is faulty or if it is normal behaviour. Doesnt hurt to ask!

                • @meowmeowmeow: Ahh, I was more about it leaving tracks along the edge of the carpet than stopping.

  • Never got error running on carpet.

    For the tracing into carpet:
Yes, it happened with me as well. It just simply the fact that there is no foot traffic at all at the edge of the room. So once the vacuum`s wheel flattens the carpet fibres, they stay at that angle. No foot traffic no movement in the fibres. You just keep smashing the fibres down every single time.

You need to use a normal vacuum once a month to get the fibres back up. Or try some kind of brush.

I noticed it after several months and then vacuumed it. Do long term damage.
