Translated Shipping Fee for Taobao and Tmall, Ask Anything

Hi Bargainers,

Just saw many want to buy items from Taobao and Tmall but confused about the shipping fees. From my experience, most items in Taobao/Tmall are cheaper than Aliexpress/Joybuy/Banggood, even with the shipping costs, especially when you buying something big (more than 1kg). There are three ways to choose for delivery: Ocean, Air, Direct. Costs from low to high: Ocean-Air-Direct, Speed from low to High: Ocean-Air-Direct. However, due to the virus thing, there might not be a significant difference between Ocean and Air. I usually choose Ocean and it takes 1.5-2 months to ship to Aus. There is a 20-day free storage service, they can hold your orders in their warehouse so you can wait for all your orders to arrive at the warehouse, they will then package all your Taobao/Tmall orders into one package so that you can save money, especially for the operational fee and the first 500g fee for Ocean.

Air:
Collect & Collect (might available within metropolitan areas only): Maximum 20 kg, 63CNY (12.8AUD) for every 0.5 kg. No more than 90cm for each length, width or height and no more than 160 cm for the sum of the length, width and height.
Deliver to door: 66CNY (13.4AUD) for every 0.5 kg, same size and weight limits with C&C

Ocean:
Small items (fees based on weight): Total weight of all items together no more than 20kg, the total volume after packing all items to one package no more than 0.1m3, no more than 160 cm for the sum of the length, width and height after packing all items to one package, no more than 90cm for each length, width or height for each item in the package
Big items (fees based on volume): All other items that not belong to the small item. 260 CNY (53AUD) for each 0.1cm3 volume if the total volume is less than 0.5cm3, 240CNY (48.8AUD) for each 0.1cm3 volume if the total volume is greater than 0.5cm3. Additional 100CNY (20AUD) operational fee applies for each order.

Direct:
Currently not available and can't find the price on the website, based on my previous experience, the costs are slightly more than Air, and last time took 10 days to arrive

You don't need to pay GST if the total value of one shipping package is less than $1000 AUD.

  • Do you recommend using google chrome (easiest for translation) and using Tmall or taobao over aliexpress?

I've heard of friends getting parts for electric scooters from taobao, and they have found things that are difficult to find on aliexpress.

What tips do you have for using these online shopping sites, without having the required language skills?

For translation, yes I would recommend Google. For shopping, I use all of them, compare the prices and choose the cheapest one. I wouldn't recommend sticking on one site. For those small parts or something you want to buy doesn't have a brand name, Taobao will be a better choice. For those with brand names (typically Xiaomi), I would recommend Tmall. I speak both Chinese and English so I don't really know what is like using Taobao/Tmall without knowing Chinese, especially there are many sellers putting item details inside images that Google cannot translate. The best option is to find a friend who knows Chinese to help you, but you can always using Aliexpress if you think the money you will be saving is not worth the efforts using Taobao/Tmall.

  • Hi OP, in your experience, where does the package go after it arrives in Australia via ocean shipping? Does it go with auspost? Also do you get tracking or just pray it arrives and doesn't get lost?

    • +1

Hi, It will depend on where you live. When I was in Melbourne, they have their own truck and people to deliver, and now in Darwin, they go with Auspost. If you have registered an account for Auspost and have the same address and mobile number in your account with the shipping address, the Auspost tracking number will be automatically generated and added to your Auspot account as soon as you paid your shipping fee on Taobao/Tamll and you can track your order on Auspost, but the status will not be updated until your order arrives in Australia and passes clearance. Alternatively, you can always track shipping status on Taobao/Tmall, they update shipping status in more details and in real-time. They will tell when your order has left China, arrives in Australia, passed the clearance and on board for delivery.

      • Thank you so much for answering OP! I have a few orders sitting at the warehouse before I consolidate and ship all together, but I've been worried the past few days about it maybe not showing up after a long wait, or they just randomly leave it at my mailbox out in the street like how my usual aliexpress orders are delivered. I guess I should ship and forget so I don't anticipate ahaha.

  • Hey OP, sorry for digging the grave, I'm hoping you can help me.

I'm very interested in buying something from Taobao but am wondering what the delivery timeframes are like to Sydney.

    • Hi,

I'm not quite sure about the delivery time to Sydney. Last time I bought something from Taobao was in June this year and it took almost two months to get delivered. It might be faster now because of the ease of restrictions.

  • I bought an item a month ago during Vic lock down . Two weeks from China to Melbourne. Very happy.

  • Two weeks to two months is a pretty big range. Is there a chance that I get scammed? Where I pay but never see my items and can't get my money back?
