Best Way to Sell a Brand New iPhone XR 128GB (Fully Sealed)

Hey all!

Before the Velocity store shut down I spent all my points and ended up getting a black iPhone XR 128gb.

It just arrived, it's brand new, box is completely sealed with receipt.

I want to sell it for the best possible price and use this money to get a brand new iPhone XS 256gb (ideally, I know they are low stock).

If I sell on eBay, I'll get hit with 11% fees (ebay + Paypal).

If I sell on Gumtree, I'll get a million texts offering $500 for it…

What would be the best way for me to sell or swap it for close to new price?

Alternatively, would any bricks and mortar store accept this? The velocity store is still closed.

  • Put on eBay with your phone number in the listing, on case anyone wants to ask you "questions" about the item wink wink.

Don't ebay scan for and subsequently remove phone numbers from listing descriptions?

      • Not sure, I've done it many times without issues? Nat recall if I've done it recently.

      • They do. I think one way to get around it is to mix digits with the spelt out number, but not sure if that's been resolved. People can report posts that include numbers too anyway.

      • oh four oh one one two three zero zero zero

I have seen this on eBay.

  • give you $500 cash for it. ;)

  • $505?

    • raise you, $750

    • $506

    • Would you take 250 cash today? it's all I can afford and my cat just died

List it on Gumtree and they allow you to list 2 items on eBay every month without final value fees. You'll still get slugged by PayPal but it's better than paying both eBay and PayPal.

    • I thought that was just listing fees? if not then that's not bad!

      • +2

They have allowed me to sell two products a month per email without the final value fees. Listing fee's aren't much anyway.

      • It's great! Saved $50 on a Switch sale!

eBay definitely has the greatest range but the fees!

  • You could try mobile muster or one of those type

This is for my son's birthday can we go $200. He really really wants it.

          • @No Username: I sold 50+ items on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace and I haven't gotten one of these yet.
Must be an American thing? As I see this a lot on various "choosing beggars" videos.

  • +12

Don't forget to open it to check if the item is there and then advertise it as unopened.

That's the trend atm on gumtree and ozbargain.

    • +2

Ask ZackyD, he can assist with this.

    • Ha, OK, good thing I did check. Yep, it was there.

If I sell on Gumtree, I'll get a million texts offering $500 for it…

Just part of the game mate. I didn't see the government offer $1500 for JobKeeper and a million texts to ATO offering to take $750. But there is hope!

  • +4

Make sure you say it's an unwanted prize/gift.

  • gumtree is better to sell things.
but high value item like iphone can be dangerous. seen few news about people trying sell phones on gumtree and ended up getting robbed or even killed.

if you must sell on ebay, maybe wait until they have promotion like $0 listing fee.

or ask people you know if they want to buy it off from you.

Please link to information about people being killed for items on guntree…

      • i lolled too

… yeah, I never believed that e e cummings guy.

      • I couldn't find the link for the phone but this poor guy (link) was killed when he tried to sell foreign currency notes.

Highly recommend a burner $2 SIM in an old phone and new gmail address for one-off selling online, if not for the 3am lowball offers then at least for the potential after sales support demands from the psychotic buyer. Once burnt you will never make this mistake again.

    You can consider Cash Converters.

    • -1

      $50 lol

      • Pardon me?

        • +5

Crime Cash Converters are worse than Apple's "Recycling" program - absolutely not worth it unless you desperately need your drugs RIGHT NOW.
Better would spend time on Gumtree with low-ballers than give it to CC.

          • @Blue Cat: From what I recall, they require identification to accept goods for sale. If that's the case, then there's much less chance of crime.

            • @kahn: I meant Crime as in, criminally underpaying you.
I know they require ID even if you are selling something worth $1, happened with me once lol

            • @kahn: Requiring an ID is the theory. Real world doesn’t always work that way.

From experience (for about 2-3 years I bought and sold iPhones and iPads, some new and sealed), even on Ebay, it's hard to get 85% and above of an iPhones RRP, even if it's new/sealed in box with receipt. You can get free listing and final value fee on EBay via their Gumtree promo but you'll still wear the Paypal fee which is about 2.4%, if I'm not mistaken.

    • Thanks. FYI I was thinking maybe $50 or $100 off RRP (before my fees), it is the hottest selling iPhone model, size and colour and still pretty recent.

  • OK, so before these answers rolled in I listed it on Gumtree.

Had a guy calling from a private number, didn't leave voicemail, wasn't forthcoming with his name (until I asked), didn't give me his number (to call him back)… the whole interaction felt off. He said he'll be at mine in 30 mins then never showed up. As I waited I was stressing about how to do the exchange, it would be so easy for someone to just show up with a knife and there goes $1,000+ They'd naturally want to see the phone, I'd want to see the cash, etc. Better to do during the daytime in a cafe or something in hindsight.

Back in the day selling things on the Trading Post was much better, even that being in physical print!

I tend to agree, an item like this is a scammer magnet on Gumtree. Will try the GT-> EB route described here.

Next question - where could I get a XS in Space Grey 256gb?? Seems to be out of stock everywhere! (JB has silver and gold).

    Much appreciated everyone, thank you!

Yikes, just run away as far as possible! Red flags everywhere!
I am sure you will find a better buyer soon.

    • Jb looks to have it in stock in space grey now. They didn’t a couple of days ago when I checked.

  • I looked for 'ozbargain classifieds' ('nomoneynoproblems' above)and found two expired entries. It sounded like a good idea for this phone and other stuff. Anyone know if it's operating?

  • +1

I have lots of success selling from Gumtree, just don't bother with lowballer. Remember to accept only cash and meet up at public places.

    • Good advice.

I'd add during daytime hours as well.

This guy wanted to meet up at night… like 9:30pm.

  • +1

Hey man, on Gumtree you can set a minimum price so you won't get offers below that price at all. Very useful, try this 👌

    • +1

I did, they still message me :)

It's a great idea though! I made the auto-reject thing $1 less than the asking.

  • thanks, John Kimble. I was obviously looking in the wrong place.

  • Mobilemonster ?

  • Just keep it and move on without problems
