How to Mount Outdoor Blinds Under Eaves

Our outdoor patio is part of the roof for our house and I would like to install outdoor patio blinds from Spotlight or Bunnings (they seem similar).

From the photos and videos I've seen, all of them show the head rail being fastened flush to a beam, eg…

In my case, I would probably need to fasten the head rail to a stud under the eaves and let it drop at a right angle to the head rail. Has anyone done this before? Or any other suggestions?

  • Post a photo of your patio and also the product you are looking to buy.

  • You are going to have to lift a tile or sheet and have a look at what support structure there is inside. There will have to be a beam in there but there will probably be a space between the eave sheets and the beam so this will need to be considered.

    • Yeah, this.
You'll probably need to install a baton to span across the Joists and then affix the blind to the Baton as it's highly unlikely that the Joist positions are in the correct locations for you to install the blind direct into.

Just paint the baton the same colour as your eaves and it'll barely be noticeable.

How do the outdoor blinds at Bunnings compare to Stratco or Spotlight? Can anyone comment on the quality?

  • And check that your eaves aren't made of asbestos before you drill into them. We learnt the hard way.

There won't be any asbestos in the eaves sheets. You can see from the picture that this is a new house build.
      As a General Rule …
      if your house was built:
before the mid-1980s it is highly likely that it has asbestos-containing products
between the mid-1980s and 1990 it is likely that it has asbestos containing products
after 1990 it is unlikely that it has asbestos-containing products.a

      • Woops, didn't look at the picture! My bad.

  • You really need a custom made blind with universal brackets to mount from post to post. Outdoor blinds become like a sail once you install it and the wind might take the blind down. Normally we mount the headbox brackets or universal brackets to the brick post using spaghetti and 40 to 50mm screws.
