Zeros (0) at The Beginning of Bank Account Number

Hi all,

I've recently opened an account with Macquarie and noticed their account numbers have three zeros "000" at the start of the 6 digit account number.

Making the total account number 9 digits (plus 6 for the BSB)

If I'm transferring from another bank do I need to out all of these zeros? EG my account looks something like 182182 - 000123456

Would it still work if I just used 182182 - 123456? without the zeros?

Cheers

Don't have a Macquarie Bank account, but I can send to/receive to a CBA account without the zeros.

But if I'm depositing cash in a smart ATM, I have to put the leading zeros in, it thinks the account number is incomplete if I don't and won't let me proceed.

It would still work without the zeros.

Tested and can confirm it does

      Thanks :)

I don't think it matters if you drop the leading zeros. That said, I always follow the way the bank gives out the account numbers to use.
Since Macquarie specifies the account number with leading zeros, I will put that in.

If you're worried, just send $1 as test before sending larger amounts.

  • Get them to sign up to a PayID and then use their mobile/email as the destination for payments.
