Who buys fake whisky to the point they need a book about it?

    • +2

It's to be educated so you don't end up buying a fake. Not so relevant in Aus as fake stuff doesn't get into the country. Overseas it is more prevalent.

      • +1

Ppl buy whisky online from overseas, even more so now. So it is a risk.

        Especially fake macallan.

        • That's not all that's fake!
In Australia we are protected to some extent from fake goods (Border can't check everything so some sneaks past). Generally, Border does OK with large commercial shipments arriving in containers or planes. However, the number of fakes that arrives by mail is mind-boggling. Buying branded items of any description on-line is risky.

Buying pharmaceuticals on-line is very high risk due to consequences if they are not manufactured to stringent standards. For example, even if the right ingredients are included, they may not be mixed correctly.

    • The advice in the book is basically standard advice for buying anything online.
-Don’t buy stuff to good to be true.
-Don’t trust people with bad pictures or refusing pictures.
-Don’t trust people hiding their feedback etc

Wasn’t particularly informative on the subject unless your new to buying anything online.

Can neg my comment if you like but it is what it is…

        Direct quotes from the book.

“If you find something that you would like to buy online, ask the seller if he/she could provide you with more detailed pictures, preferably close up pictures of the label. If the seller tells you that those he/she already uploaded are the best photos of the whiskey bottle, then you need to step away.“

“Only buy from sellers with 100% positive feedback. If other buyers were satisfied with the product they got from the seller, then there is a large chance that you will experience the same.”

“If you see a seller with a bottle of vintage whiskey priced at a competitive rate, but his/her feedback is hidden, then take that as a sign to turn around and look elsewhere.“

“ If the deal seems too good to be true then it probably is. Another red flag you need to keep an eye out for is if the seller placed a very low price on a bottle of whiskey that usually sells for a whole lot more.”

“ Never ever buy expensive whiskey from an unknown seller.”

The only time it starts getting slightly on track is the next paragraph

“Know what you are looking for. To become somewhat of an expert at identifying counterfeit whiskeys, you need to know what to look for when inspecting the pictures of the bottles. To do that, you need to familiarize yourself with every little detail that whiskey bottles have. For instance, a 1990 Ardberg Single Malt Whiskey (valued at $230) will always have a gold capsule (the seal at the neck of the bottle). If you see bottles that have one using a different color then you can be sure that it is a fake.“

Again… common sense buying online though…
        The final advice:

“If this is your first time stocking your whiskey collection then just buy from your local, licensed liquor vendor.“

This is all the advice It has on spotting fakes. As i said, not particularly informative as it’s general common sense for buying anything online.
You could easily substitute whisky for camera/iphone/high yield investment car and give the same advice.

Not dissing the book, it has it’s good points.
Advice on spotting a fake is not one of them.

Good read for a free book on a good subject though.
