New Build Appliances: Should We Go Smeg?

We are building a new home and deciding on appliances and want quality. We are looking at Smeg not because they are the best quality but because we plan on being in the house for 2-5 years then selling and know this can be a selling point.

Our instinct would normally to go for Bosch or Miele but thinking going the fancy option may help resale.

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated. I'm not sure if we are completely misguided thinking it would influence resale…

Thanks in advance for any help!

Your prospective buyer thinks the same way.

    Miele personally.

If you can afford it, I would.

  • If you are not planning to sell the house as soon as you build it, then by the time you sell the house and use the appliances with wear and tear over the years they will become old anyway. The technology changes so quick you will not really benefit from any perceived increase in value by spending more now. Go for the best priced reputable brand you can get with no real brand allegiance - i.e. don't go for no name appliances, but if you stick to known brands you will be fine - LG, Smeg, Miele, Bosch, Westinghouse, Kleenmaid etc. Alternatively if you are just making a quality decision and want the best appliances for your self then Smeg, Miele, Bosch - but this will be an unrelated decision to house value.

    • The technology around built in appliances has not changed that fast. Sure there's a few more features in modern appliances but a lot of them have been around in 1 brand or another for many years.

Our Smeg oven is waayyy overrated. Cannot recommend.

Don't put in Smeg.We put in 13K worth and they have been garbage.

I'm on my third property now and not once have I looked at the brand of the appliances, or compared two properties based on this point.

We bought a house with Smeg appliances. Don't think this influenced our offer price at all.

Based on performance so far, we wouldn't replace any of them with Smeg when we need to update.

I too had Smeg appliances in a new build and they were crap … obviously they forgot the "ma" off the end of their brand name!

  • +4

To me, smeg = having more $ than sense.

  • +2

Smeg are Not the best qulity. Why would you think this?

  • +3

Miele - quality without being obnoxious.

As a sidenote, am I the only one who thinks 'smegma', every time someone brings up their 'Smeg' appliances? Thanks but no thanks.

my only thoughts are of Red Dwarf when i hear this

I don't know if its because you're asking on a bargain hunters thread? But I'm also not a fan of Smeg, I'd either not think about it, or I'd think I'm paying more money for a place because of some over priced appliances. But to be fair, I just don't really like the Smeg look and name so it may be a personal thing.

From my experience with Smeg I'd say it would be a negative with me. If I were interested in buying a house with Smeg appliances I'd be adjusting my offer to cover the cost of replacing them with another brand (Miele preferably, but almost anything other than Smeg).

Hi everyone, thanks for all the valuable advice! You have all seemingly confirmed my thoughts on it and going to give Smeg a miss in favour of Bosch or Miele!
    Cheers!

  • i've had a number of different brands for oven/cooktop. i've truly never had a problem with any (miele, technika, blanco, ariston, westinghouse). to be honest my favourites so far have been the ariston and the ones i'm using now which are westinghouse.

    dishwashers i've always had asko

  • Smeg are actually very well built. Some models are slightly over priced but you get that. Smeg don't stack up to Miele but I would personally put a Smeg oven in before I did a Bosch. Whilst Miele ovens are good they are just packed full of electronics that are not really needed for cooking food. One bonus with Smeg is I say they are technician friendly, easy to pull apart and repair.

    Miele is better than Smeg.
How did you come up with these rankings?

    • Miele? Smeg? Bosch? Over priced is what they are. Plenty of ovens at more reasonable prices that bake just as well and have the same function. You need to compare ovens on their functions/features.

      • Yes all over priced but Miele are a much better build. Very over engineered but a lot goes into R&D.

Service and diagnostics is very in depth on Miele appliances for service technicians, can connect laptops to the appliances.

  • Smeg definitely make the best looking appliances.

However their build quality and cooking ability is terrible.

    • Best looking appliances? How did you arrive at that conclusion? I agree with you on the terrible build quality.

      • Last time I went to E&S they definitely were the nicest aesthetically.

      • Looks are subjective, but Smeg seem to design from the form over function handbook. It is possibly why many people rate them as premium despite their build quality.

    • Smegs cooking build quality is not terrible, to be honest their build quality rates higher then most middle priced appliance brands.

  • my 4 year old Smeg dishwasher stopped working last week. planning to replace with Bosch one.
something breaking down with in 4 year doesn't gives confidence in brand.

We're currently in the new build phase and sorting out kitchen stuff.

Had a Smeg in our old apartment. Didn't like it, all the numbers on the dial scratched off which was quite frustrating so had to buy new stickers to put on - not an elegant solution.

Miele was a little out of our price range so we went with NEFF which is a european brand (made by Bosch). A few friends have them and swear by them.

There are some good promotions currently around currently.

    Just my 2 cents

We recently brought electrolux package and very happy with how it looks in kitchen.

  • I've recently been doing my own research on appliances, trying to determine price vs value.

While I agree Miele is up there in terms of quality built, I can't agree that a whole kitchen fit-out with Miele is a.k.a 'is the best'.

For example, based on reviews and ratings, you cant go wrong with a Bosch Dishwasher (German Made).

In terms of Rangehood, you want silence and reliability, while Bosch makes a fantastic rangehoods look at the brand Sirius which is much better.

When we look at Oven's & Cooktops, we always automatically think Miele/SMEG.

Just cause SMEG is made in Italy, doesn't mean its a Ferrari. I think with SMEG you are buying the 'look'.

Miele on the other hand, I've always felt its for the brand-snobs (no offence intended OZBs)

Based on my research, I recently decided on Electrolux to be that balance of quality and price.

You should know Electrolux is made in Australia if branded Electrolux, IKEA appliances are also Electrolux/Whirlpool made in Europe but unbranded.
