Kathmandu jacket buy or dont buy

Cheaper today!

I wanna buy the kathmandu jacket https://www.kathmandu.com.au/mens/jackets-and-vests/mens-dow…

$360 with members. Should I buy or wait for a bit?
Sussed out uniqlo NF MacPac and didnt like any of them compared to this.

MP was great pricing but ugh the material was so scrunchy might as well have been kgn.

Any further discount recommendations? Im tryna find an employee but havent found any.

Edit: pls no jokes about being basic haha. Ive already accepted this.

    Eh? I don't get it.

"That jacket looks basic." (and variations thereof)

It might not seem funny, but just imagine it being said by Sheldon in a Big Bang Theory scene followed by canned laughter. It would probably be the funniest moment in the show.

thumb rule: if it's not at least 50% off at Kathmandu= do not buy as it'll be discounted in a few days

    • ^this

my 2cents, better go with HH or The NF.

    • Whats HH? NF were terrible designs, I had a look.
Any particular reason not to like Kaths?

      • HH is Helly Hansen

it's only my personal preferences, due to the country where the products were made in, also something about i'd been seeing HH and NF long before i knew Kaths is actually a brand name that only popular among Australians and NZs. If you've ever travelled or ask someone out of Australia and New Zealand, they thought you were talking about the place (Kathmandu) and not as a clothing brand. at the end of the day, it's all about you buying what you like with your hard earned money regardless brand name etc. My exgf told me Kaths is warm thou, i told her HH/NF keeping me warmer with half less bulkier (good for travelling).

          In English please.

        • It is an Australian brand, but I liked the look and feel of it much better than the other brands. I actually didn't like what NF had to offer at all, it was quite disappointing. Maybe the Chaddy store doesn't have new stock.

I guess I am also looking for the longer cut which limits my options! HH is super expensive? Around 600-700?
          Kathmandu is $359.

If youre heading to the arctic and the boss is paying, yes

  • It's in line with all the other Puff Daddy and Mumma's in Melbourne. Black and Green. Go for it. College at work had a similar one. Smells funny though. Don't know what that's from.

    • Anything with down filling smells funky/animal-ly.

    • I bought a Kathmandu down jacket A while ago and just started wearing it. It really smells of plucked bird, quite unpleasant. Have washed it so hoping it goes away. Definitely genuine feathers…
You may get the jacket cheaper in summer, that’s when we generally buy our winter stuff 😁 That price seems not too bad and if you need to stay warm now it may be worth it…

    • Maybe your college needs a wash

      • Definately the jacket.

  • Buy it

Wait OP, let me ask my neighbour. Brb in a sec…

Well? It's been 17 hours, we are still waiting.

$360 for a 600 fill duck down feels overpriced.

I think the long coat is overkill in Australia. Even if you are in Tassie.

just get OZB's fav halo for $100 when it pops ups

  • Seems slightly expensive, so hold off for a few more weeks if you want. But I love my Kathmandu jacket, I've got the same one except doesn't go down as low. I think most of Ozbargain hates Kathmandu apparently, but buy what makes you happy to wear.

    • Agreed but got a trip in two weekends. I guess if I don't see anything by next weekend I'll buy in store. Do the member prices always stay low?

I have owned several puffer jackets of various styles and brands, and two of my Kathmandu jackets lost the zipper pulls within a year. I am being extremely careful with my third one, which is also a year old. My Macpac is still ok. Just make sure you keep the receipts

  • The common argument is that they used to be mid to top tier quality but now are like average. I would get a branded one if it was me. Not sure about discounts, but would not hurt to ask. Usually the staff are proactive in greeting etc.

  • I wouldn’t buy it, with Kathmandu ? North Face is much better design and quality !

Did that really need an exclamation mark?

    • What price and design are we talking? I didn't like much of their offering. And what makes you say quality? They all seem somewhat similar tbh.

I’ve purchased Kathmandu jackets a few times (they last me a long time so I haven’t purchased very many). One jacket is over 15 years and is still amazing that I purchased for winter in Europe and America. I bought a new one 4 years ago to go to Iceland in December and it held up really well. Can’t recall the filling weight but it was perfect and I’ve not had any issues with it. I did get it on half price or less (can’t recall exactly but it was a big discount) and it was most likely around $200 or less

    • There is a number on the sleeve. Mine is 550, I thought it was warmer. Wearing it daily, no jumpers etc, just a silk top and the jacket. Keeps me warm

  • +2

Personally I do not rate Kathmandu. The quality is decent and the products are ingenuitive but I braved the European winter in full ktm gear and it wasn't enough.

My biggest mistake was not buying my gear from Europe. It was far better, looked more stylish and was definitely warmer.

It's fine for a quick visit to Tasmania or something, but so is Uniqlo and it doesn't cost $300.

    Go with macpac at least.

    • The issue with macpac is that its all scrunched up :(
Uniqlo one is the closest variety and it is cheap but realistically the finish is uglier

      • What do you mean all scrunched up?

        • All the jackets in store had scrunched up wrinkles

I thought trips to Antarctica were not possible right now?

Patagonia is better than Kathmandu. If you can afford it, go for Canada Goose.

  • We have both Patagonia and Kathmandu down jackets, both are very good. Kathmandu its best to join their free club, they send you a $20 birthday voucher, wait for 40-50% off.

  • Patagonia is far better than Kathmandu but for everyday use and above Kathmandu is fine too. I think Canada Goose will be overkill and too expensive.

  • Kathmandu is great bang for buck, they are a bit more expensive but actually last. My old one held up for 5 years (heavy hiking, worn and washed for weeks on trips). Fashionable and can wear ones to work too, better than cycling through cheap nasty pieces.
