Venting: $330 Fine for Rolling through Stop Sign

Just want to vent. Was approaching a road and instead of stopping at a stop sign went through at slow pace and now given a $330 fine in Victoria and 3 demerit points. I know I'm in the wrong but it's a stretch to fine people for slowing down instead of a complete stop.

These cops really do show no care. Don't know if I can even be bothered fighting it and don't get a warning. No prior speeding issues in last 2 years. Any chance of leniency?

Anyone else cop a fine for not coming to complete stop?

I'm with the OP on this one. There are only two instances when one really needs to stop:

    1) In the name of love
    2) Hammer time

    • +6

      3) Before you go and break my heart

      • +6

        4) Wait a minute, fill my cup, put some liquor in it

        • +8

          5) Collaborate and listen

          • +6

@macfudd: Pro tip, if you are near anyone who asks their Google Home to "stop", quickly chime with "collaboate and listen" afterwards and Google will start playing the song.

10/10 times it makes my wife unhappy with me. Totally worth it.

    • +3

right now. Thank you very much.
I need somebody with a human touch.

  • +3

threads like this should be closed. You broke the law. You must come to a complete stop at a stop sign. It can not be anymore simple than that

    • +2

      But but…. the "lolz"…

    • These are the most entertaining threads, why would want these closed?

  • +4

Suck it up and pay it. You did the wrong thing, so no point complaining. My brother's girlfriend copped a fine for the same thing years ago, she was a trackwork rider, heading to work at 4am, rolled through a stop sign at Fairfield, not another car on the road … except for the police car that pinged her. Stop sign means stop, doesn't matter what time of day, where or when.

  • +4

    good

    really gives me the sh*ts

also people who seem to think that stopping half way across the pedestrian crossing is the same as stopping at the stop line.

  • +1

$330 is that all, I got pinged for the exact same thing about a month ago here in SA. Try $507!!!!

    • +3

      That's what I call a high-yield stop sign.

  • +1

you know why fines get higher and higher? Because people like you don't get the message. One day, the fine will reach a point - because of people like you - that you will go broke for one infringement.

  • +1

    Stop Sign

What part of Stop don't you understand?

    • +1

      The bit about stopping, obviously.

      • +4

Nar I think it was the sign bit.

  • +7

These cops really do show no care.

The police clearly cared, as they issued a fine with demerits.

  • +6

    Tough crowd in here today!

I'm not sure about the Eastern States, but here in WA the majority of the intersections here (T & 4 way) are under STOP control.

Most of these intersections should be Give Way control as the available site distance exceeds that required for STOP control as set out in ASQ742.2.

Unfortunately back in the day STOP control was the default treatment for intersections regardless of the site distance available. Therefore the effectiveness of STOP control at intersections which have a genuine need for motorists to STOP is lost.

Thankfully the majority of these intersections are slowly being converted to Give Wsy control….it annoys the $hit out of me having to come to a STOP at an intersection where there's no genuine reason to.

  • +6

Have you not seen the bit in the Fat Pizza movie where the cop is beating the guy who rolled through the stop sign and asks "do you want me to stop or just slow down?!".

  • +3

Just tell them that your failure to stop was a act of protest , as your in Victoria no fine should be applicable……

    • +7

Sounds like you need to go back to ‘murica.

      • -7

I'd love to, only place where they are smart enough to fight off bureaucracy to some extent. Our road rules are very backwards and geared to make revenue, saving lives is way down the list in practice

        • +6

Doesn’t Seem very smart right now. 100000 dead from a virus that Australia with 10% of the population has 0.1% of the fatalities. An absolute goose of a leader and millions protesting in the middle of a pandemic.

          • +3

@Euphemistic: Mate, what have you got against against geese!?

            • +2

@John Kimble: Yes. I apologise to all the geese out there, it is unfair to cast them with such aspersions.

          • -5

@Euphemistic: After November, it will quiet down, the radical left are going all out for the election

Edit: (after your stealth edit? ) You can't trust everything the media says, they have been wrong 99% of the time, what makes you think they are correct now about pandemics and civil war riots?
I believe it when I see it

            • +5

@lew380: The media cannot be wrong 99% of the time. There is too much of it available. Sure, some of the big outlets are biased by big business - Fox anyone? And there plenty of click bait but, at least in this country, there are some standards the media largely adhere to which involve reporting facts, not opinions.

You don’t believe it’s a pandemic? You don’t believe the protests? I’ll let you stick to your conspiracies.

What stealth edit? What you see is what is posted by me. Occasionally I’ll go back and change stuff, but this site blocks edits once someone has replied.

              • -1

@Euphemistic: Sorry to confuse you, lets say 85% is a realistic figure.

The media don't report facts, at best, they cherry pick certain facts which suit their bias, whether left or right(to a lesser extent). A good example is trump not maintaining his social distancing, a big outcry from the media is currently going on, yet they have almost missed the millions of degenerates on the streets who are spreading every form of disease with ease. The disparity on which facts they choose to care about is just getting insane, I don't care about anything they say anymore, you can almost be 100% certain that it is way out of context and irrelevant, even a direct quote can be misleading

That being said, I'm not old enough to remember if journalists have ever been truthful, I feel like this is always the state of things. But the bias in the last 4-5 years of hippy journalists has been a good reminder to not trust a thing these groups believe.

                • +3

                  @lew380:

suit their bias, whether left or right(to a lesser extent)

Not sure if serious. The right is controlled by big business and they have a significant bias toward making more profits. Both extremes have an agenda to push. In between there is a lot of media that present close to the facts.

We’ve gone from reporters telling us facts in 30mins and allowing us to make up our own minds to ‘journalists’ presenting their opinions for 24hrs straight and we need to work out if it’s true. Not a good situation. America is the worst example of this.

                  • -1

@Euphemistic: What's wrong with big business? I have no problem with people making money, good for them, that's just how society works, jealousy is not an attractive attribute. If your talking about billionaire corporations trying to change societal norms for no good reason, most are virtue signalling lefties as far as I'm aware. Bill Gates, soros, zuckerberg, the entirety of Hollywood, mainstream media and educational campuses, all radical lefties

                    • +3

@lew380: I also have no problem with businesses making money, but many of the biggest businesses routinely take advantage of the disadvantaged (slave labour etc) and damage the environment to turn a profit when they could take a bit of a hit to the bottom line and create a sustainable, profitable business hat will not take advantage of others.

Take a look at yourself if you think that the billionaire corporations are all doing great work and people like Bill Gates are attempting to make the world a better place at their own expense. Is helping other people from your own wealth such a bad thing?

No one needs billions of dollars to live comfortably.

                      • @Euphemistic: Yes, like Apple using Chinese slave labour, probably all phones are made using modern slave labour(Chinese slaves and Congolese cobalt miners), I hope you don't own a phone, that would be very hypocritical.

Big business rip off the poor because WE suport them

    • completely agree with you, you can tell with the downvotes the amount of sheep in here

      • +2

And it’s quite easy to tell the conspiracy theory nutters as well - just a different type of sheep. Although somewhat worse, because they often don’t listen to reason and avoid science and evidence. The number of downvoted is a good indicator.

Of course, the majority isn’t always right… but the popularity of anti vax and flat earth isn’t a good sign either.

  • +15

Hopefully this might help identify the difference.

A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a Glasgow copper .

He thinks that he is smarter than the cop because he is a lawyer from a big city and is certain that he has a better education then any Jock cop.

He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Glasgow cops expense!

Glasgow cop says," License and registration, please."

Lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."

Glasgow cop says, "You still didn't come to a complete stop. License and registration, please."

Lawyer says, "If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and registration; and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket."

Glasgow cop says, "Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir."

    The Lawyer exits his vehicle.

The Glasgow cop takes out his baton, starts beating the lawyer and says,
"Do you want me to stop, or just slow down?

  • +2

    Useless thread. Just lock it.

  • A few years back a work colleague received the same fine for rolling through a stop sign. She wrote to Fines Victoria requesting leniency because it was her first driving offense and pledged she had learnt her lesson. She was let off with a warning. But OP says he has previous form, plus he seems to be a BLOKE (I think). So yeah, nah, let the pain do its intended work to amend your driving behavior and drive on.

  • I say put your phone down and keep you eyes on the road. Obviously you were so pissed off about this that you wrote your post straight away in the car.

I bet NEXT time you stop.

  • I like …paused.

  • +4

There was a scene in Housos where a cop pulled over a guy for going through a stop sign. The guy asked for leniency, saying he was going really slow.

The cop started whacking him with his baton and said "I'm sorry. Would you like me to slow down or come to a complete stop?"

  • +1

Must suck not being able to understand what the word STOP means.

  • +2

What you did is legal ONLY if you see the "Give Way" symbol sign:
    https://www.istockphoto.com/au/photo/give-way-sign-gm9541347…

You STOP when the sign says STOP. So therefore you disobeyed a sign and rightly got done.

  • +2

This reminds me of fat pizza lol
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2vjvaIKnr8

    super quick bruh

    • Ah Fat Pizza! I thought it was Housos. My bad.

    • I thought the exact same thing,… copied the link but checked here before posting and there it is 😂

  • +1

I done the same thing , the copper asked the following.

Which part of " STOP " don't you understand?

    • +1

More like "Which part of revenue raising do you not understand"

      • +2

Why is it revenue raising when a person breaks the law?

        • +2

Exactly - if people were following the law there would be no revenue to be raised

          • +6

@whatgift: This make too much sense for people to understand. please do not ever say something like this ever again.

  • -1

I got pinged $400 when going 30 km/hr, in a 40 km/hr school zone. Yes I was going under the speed limit! Although the fine was for lane filtering in a school zone during school zone hours. 10 minutes earlier and it would have been legal.

    • -4

any lane filtering should be illegal. you just need to wait patiently as the rest of us road users mate

    • +2

I'm not a huge fan of any lane filtering, but I had no idea it changed depending on school zone or not though, I figured it was always either allowed in some states, or not allowed.

      • +2

If I knew it was illegal in a school zone I would not have done it past a police car.

    • lol , so good

  • +1

What a well-timed post about police injustice. Much outrage.

    • +1

So is getting a fine considered as police brutality now? #stopsignsaveslives?

  • Tell the cop in which frame i was stopped- in the point of reference of my car, yes i was stopped. But in the frame of the galaxy we are moving at 400km/s so no..no one has stopped.

  • +6

Just came by to throw some petrol on this little fire…

I like this type of revenue raising by the police - as only fools have to pay it. You need to be a person that can’t be bothered following the road rules, and can’t be bothered looking for cops when you do. Everyone of you is indirectly saving me money on taxes :)

  • -6

Guarantee nobody here always stops at the stop sign, hypocrites.

    • +4

I've always stopped at Stop signs, always. So, I'm sorry to spoil your 'guarantee' there bud

      • +1

Yep, so do I. Can't actually think where any actually are on the roads I drive though except for on the street I'm currently living on. Those stop signs have spoon drains just before them though so if you don't stop you're likely going to scratch the hell out of your front bumper.

      • +1

        Same here.

    • Agreed, except they're not complaining about getting caught or blaming the police for doing their job.

    • +1

      Stop it or cop it.

    • BS. There are reasons for Stop signs at certain intersections due to multiple factors (mostly visibility though). I always come to stop at a Stop even though ive nearly been rear ended by impatient pricks

  • Y'all got trolled

  • +1

Good job. Cop! And OP you could have destroyed someone’s life.

  • +1

sounds like you earned the fine, not sure what you have to vent about. STOP sign you must stop, Give Way lets you do what you did as you seem to be aware. If anything you should be angry at yourself for such a silly mistake.

    • -1

I have a feeling you don't know what venting means.

      • +2

I do, but it seems to be he is focused on the cop rather than his own stupidity.

        • lol ok you don't know what venting is.

    If not posted already

  • +2

Join the Dr Phil site to vent. You're on the wrong site here. This place is full of law abiding citizens who follow the letter of every single clause of every single law without question. No room for discretion or context or common sense or even the spirit of the law. Do the time do the crime!! Imagine all the babies you could have killed.

  • I mean, they are pretty hard to read to be fair.

  • +2

OP I think you have a very strong case and should argue in court that the sign could be misinterpreted:
    STOP could mean:
    S: Sing
    T:Tirelessly
    O: on
    P: Piano music

Or Stop could mean : move if safe

Unless actually stop has one meaning which is to (profanity) STOP

    • whoever negged me I recommend you learn sarcasm x

  • +3

Have the people that write these posts never read another complaint from an Ozbargain user on disobeying road rules?

Must just be suckers for punishment.

  • +4

No prior speeding issues in last 2 years

So you had speeding fine as well just before 2 years. There is 10 years period required for leniency.

  • -2

Just be happy you didn't get a knee on your neck.

  • Why would you be angry if you didn't stop at a stop sign? That's like getting angry for getting a fine for speeding.

  • The only time I roll a stop sign is when I’ve slowed down enough to thoroughly check both directions for cops (and cars) or am in California.

  • +1

"but it's a stretch to fine people for slowing down instead of a complete stop."

How do you figure? You failed to come to a complete stop therefore you committed an offence and must therefore pay the penalty.

The police don't make the laws they just enforce them.

    • -1

How about install a gps speed checker on your car and a fine automatically gets sent to you house whenever you go over the limit by 1km/hr or greater?

      • +1

That's a fairly stupid suggestion. OP broke the law in plain view of Police and is complaining about being fined.

To use your example, the equivalent would be doing 51 in a 50 and then being pulled over by Police and given a fine. That's not very likely.

We all know there are arguments to be made about calibration of speed checking devices, speedos etc but stopping at a stop sign is black or white, you either do it or you don't and in this case OP chose not to and was caught by Police - end of story.

        • If you're not willing to take it up. Can't see you being any different to op.
Calibration is your bs excuse in weasling out. We all know one's car speedo is about 4km/hr under your actual speed. But that's besides the point.

You're either speeding or you're not. Yes I understand you'd wanna make it rocket science, but it's not.

          • +1

@berry580: Point is even if I did choose to speed, I wouldn't do it plain view of Police… I'm not stupid!

  • +1

But the sign even tells you what to do… how can you stuff that up?

    • Above applies to you as well

  • -1

No chance, the cops are d! cks

  • +1

Slow and stop are two different words. Interesting.

  • Happened to me in WA few years ago. Cops let me go with warning.

Since then I always stop on sign for 3 seconds even on dead midnight road.

  • If there is a stop sign it means there is a high risk of danger hence the requirement for a complete stop.

  • +1

Next up on stupid ozbargain posts. Cops took my licence for doing 100km in a school zone, so unfair.
