Bathroom Ventilation to Attic

Hi all,

I'm looking to renovate my bathroom.
The ventilation fan appears to vent directly into the roof attic. I spoke with my builder and he advised me that is a standard in Australia. But whenever I look online, everyone says it's a bad idea due to dampness, bacteria, major damage, etc etc.

The property has Central air conditioning built into the attic, so I'm a bit concerned.

What's ozBargainer's understand of this?

Thanks in advance

It's standard for most roof types.

  • Yes it's typical in Australia. The bathroom has windows right?

    • Bedroom has windows, yes. So all good, ducting is basically pointless. In Australia at least?

      • Yeah I never use the vent. Most of Australia is pretty dry.

    Standard practice.

Our mild climate, relatively ‘open’ roof spaces mean it’s not really a problem.

3 houses I’ve owned, all with pitched roof have vented to roof cavity.

Your roof cavity is not meant to be air tight. Therefore moisture should not be a problem. That is also the reason why you have insulation due to roof cavity being not air tight.

  • Roof spaces are not airtight.

Just make sure the vent installer remove the batts above the exhaust. Otherwise you'll be blowing the moist air into the batts instead of into the roof space.

    Hope that helps.

"everyone says it's a bad idea due to dampness, bacteria, major damage, etc etc."
    THIS IS NONSENSE!

Your builder is correct and dont worry because roof spaces usually vent very well. If not just install a Whirlybird on the roof.

Your only other option is to move the exhaust fan to an external facing wall and vent it outside

  • I suppose some of the website aren't in Australia, different claim thus different requirements perhaps?

Thanks guys for all the response.
I'll just go without the vent then, easier for all. =)
