Disposing of Woolworths Plastic Bags

Woolworths currently aren't taking their bags back from home deliveries due to the risk of contamination. While they are recyclable it seems they are recycled specifically by Woolworths. Can anyone confirm if they can be recycled in council bins? The delivery driver just told me to use them or throw them away.

Their FAQ only mentions their own methods.

Can I recycle the reusable plastic bags that my order comes in?
Absolutely! The reusable bags and produce bags that come with your order can be recycled in store using the REDcycle bins, or by returning them to your delivery driver with your next order. Your delivery driver will then return them to the store for recycling with REDcycle.

Some Woolworths (and other supermarkets) have soft plastic recycling bins, so you can take them there.

    • Unfortunately we don't leave the house due to the need to self-isolate because of my son's extreme risk if he were to get COVID-19.

maybe you can store them for now until the pandemic is over?
if you fold them correctly, it doesn't take much space

Most councils won't take soft plastics in the council recycling bins. REDCycle is your best bet - or see if you can pass it on to someone local?

    • Thanks. That clarifies it. I really should have looked for a REDCycle FAQ before asking.

Any reason you can't reuse them?

Yeah we use them in the bathroom bins, fits perfect.

erh, don't use it for bathroom bins. it will end up in landfill and worse for environment than the single use plastic bag because it will take significantly longer to break down the plastic.

    • Then they aren't recycles. They just end up in landfill which kind of defeats the whole purpose of the legislated changes from single use bags.

If they can't be reused and have to be taken back to Woolworths to be recycled, they could've just done the same thing with the single-use bags we had before! What's the point of having the thicker bags?

By the time I bring them home, they're half destroyed already. Theres no way they can be used about 10 times (to make it equivalent to the previous single bags). So I use these new bags as rubbish bags after getting home.

        Feel free to neg away!

        • I haven't had that experience with home delivery bags but I think they are made specifically for home delivery so may be more robust? I use more robust bags for shopping when I go to pick up from the store and get years of use out of them (before we had to isolate). I expect the long term plan was to cause a shift in behaviour so everyone brought their own bags to the shops.

    • As I mentioned above we are self-isolating. Maybe I can ask someone to drop them off for me. Thanks.

      Coles also does the same

    use as bin bags

  • I think you could happily ask a neighbour nicely to take them to the supermarket for you given your situation.

    • It's very hard to talk to neighbours when you are in self-isolation.
