Thanks, I'm starting to think it might be gravity based, so dirt doesn't fall out if it's standing upright. Hopefully someone will confirm
Just checked mine now, it doesn’t have any spring. Flap moves freely.

From memory flap is always open. I sucked up a live spider and I remember thinking it could easily come out.
