Need Ideas to Fill an Area of a Patio with Pavers or Something Else?

Hi all,

My son recently decided to invest in his first little home, circa early 80's. The original house has a covered side patio which is off of the kitchen/living area and accessible via sliding doors. For some strange reason, they formed a semi-circle of brick under the kitchen window, as you walk in through the outside gate (which opens the wrong direction as well) and made it a planting area (dirt).

We want to get rid of it as it's in the way of the path through and we don't think it was a good idea/location in the first place. Our first thought was to try to find similar pavers, but due to age, I doubt that's going to happen. Have been on Gumtree/local papers but nothing so far. Other thought was pour a tinted, similar colour cement pad (maybe get artistic and sponge paint "bricks" on the cement).

Short of that, is there anything else that's not a huge headache to fix this? The area is roughly 350 x 150, but in a semi-cicle design.

Patio

Thanks everyone!

;)

  • Plant a lemon tree.

Free outdoor toilet for the fellas.

    • Do lemons not like women?

      • Their feelings are sour.

        • It'll give you the pip

  • Dig out 100mm+ of soil and fill with gravel of your choice.

  • Grass?

    • Trying to remove the dampness/soil against the foundation. It's all underneath the patio roof, too. No direct light.

      • Could you go with artificial grass? We're in the process of getting our entire yard done, and it's not cheap for us, but more than affordable for a smaller space. Can be cut to whatever size/shape you need, so would be perfect for your area.

  • Don’t concrete it, it will look terrible.

Square off the existing pavers so you don’t have a curve and use grass or gravel. That’s the cheapy solution.

Or, if you really would like it all paved, lift up all pavers and mix them with newer pavers in a random selection and pave the lot. That would be the pros solution.

    • If only we weren't a nerd family who struggles with the basics- lol.

      • Put lawn in there. Buy the lawn in metres at Bunnings and lay it down. It will look better, much better. You can do that easy… I know you can.

Edit, didn’t know it was under cover so ignore this.

Just square off that curve buy removing pavers and then fill it in with pavers, doesn’t matter if they don’t match.

  • If you don't like plants, dig a bit of soil out and fill it with large decorative white pebbles, at least you can walk on them.

Don't concrete it. Concrete does not drain water like pavers do so you can have issues with water pooling and potentially running up against the house if it's not sloped away.

  • Thanks, everyone so far. This is a covered patio, so no rain or such to worry over. I thought of pebbles, but would like to reclaim that area as a solid, stable serving spot through the kitchen window whenever we get enough $$$. We thought of enclosing the patio with screen/vinyl so we can use it year-round and not have to deal with mozzies, too.

Does anyone or has anyone ever filled in a spot such as this, after-the-fact, with bricks? I'm not even fussed with the colour mis-match.

  • PS: 150cms should have been to the top of the existing arc. Sorry about that.

Remove the pavers from the opposite side and use them to fill hole. Then replace removed pavers on other side with contrasting coloured pavers to form a border that looks like a feature rather than an after thought. .

    • I thought of that, now trying to see if we can find the right size and quantity. I keep hoping someone local will do a refurb and put their (our) old bricks on Gumtree.

    Build a deck

    • This. Just some low level footing, it will look great, functional and leveled. Digging bricks, re-compacting the soil and re-paving sounds a lot more back breaking work.
