looking for a Cheap (OEM?) copy of MS windows 64-bit

Hi,
I hv a Mac running OSX 10.6.5 and i was thinking of using bootcamp to install Windows XP, SP2 or later. Don't get me wrong , I love OSX but its such a pain having to go to a friend's place to do my tax return or to download the latest HTC ROM.I was looking on Ebay and saw an OEM version of MS Windows XP Professional incl. SP3 - English (link below) going for about USD 61 + P&H. Is that a good deal? can I find it for cheaper? The cheaper, the better really, since I'm hardly going to be using it.Has anyone bought software from Ebay? Any feedbacks?

Thanks,
V

Remember OEM must follow a brand new computer or some parts of it.

      • ..which explains why they usually sell it with a new hard drive on ebay.

        • I remember Microsoft's policy is you must buy a new hard disk and the motherboard, but maybe I'm wrong.

        • hhhhmmm, so this is why the xp code from my old box that has been sitting there for a million years won't register when I install xp on my tecra laptop?

      • Where do u get this information mate? I have install xp from my laptop to my desktop without any issue

I got a copy a while back from quicksales.com.au (when it was called OZtion)

This is the cheapest from a seller with selling history.

    From their page:

In accordance with Microsoft, and eBay's policy for listing an OEM item, your purchase will include an a non-working computer component of our choice.

I was sent some random piece of a silicon chip

    • Thanks Johnn :)

I'm going to wait for EriceKahula to get back to me .. and if he doesn't, I'll get the Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 OEM for $36 from Quicksales or might even get the ULTIMATE MS windows 7 for about $14 more :) How come its so cheap? What's the catch?

      http://www.quicksales.com.au/ad/hot-microsoft-windows-xp-pro…

      • Maybe just local retailers ripping off Australians?

      • I'm not too sure about the SP3 OEM but the 7 Ultimate is probably a MSDNAA or Technet key. There's no way you can buy a real retail copy of 7 Ultimate under $100 bucks.

        • check this link
          http://www.quicksales.com.au/ad/new-microsoft-windows-7-ulti…
It says its the RETAIL version of MS win 7. Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?

        • +1

Realized the Windows 7 Ultimate has no seal of authenticity that's included in all retail copy? I'll advise against purchasing a Windows 7 copy off there, it's probably an illegal copy (Technet/MSDNAA).

        • Agree. sounds dodgy.

      • Wouldn't have a clue why the Windows 7 is so cheap!

When I bought WindowsXP (from a different seller) it came exactly as in that picture, with no box and just the OEM cd, cd key and cardboard.

As for the Win7 listing, it claims to come sealed in the retail box??

According to the single feedback this seller has received (for Win7 also), it was

good as described & delivery a little slow

These smaller auction sites are sometimes better than eBay because there's less fees and less competition so every now and then you'll find yourself a bargain. They accept PayPal so it may be worth the risk?

  • Btw I have a macbook Pro:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Memory: 4 GB

Intel core 2 duo only work with 32-bit windows, right ?

Your macbook should be 64 bit.
but windows xp 64 bit was rubbish, don't bother ..
As a free alternative, why not download the Windows 8 beta?

      • I did think of it …but i was under the impression that the windows 8 which has been released is a developer review version ad not a beta version.
"As this is an early build of Windows 8, it is not recommended that you install this on a production machine as it might not be stable enough. " One of the reasons I want windows installed on my mac is to do my tax returns …doing MY tax return + an unstable and probably buggy windows 8 is going to drive me nuts.

        And yes you're right :) Its a 64-bit

reports on the beta have been pretty good.
and doing your tax isn't going to stress the system much.
your other option that's worth trying is macwine.. - allows you to run windows executables in macos
