No bargain if you search around…

    China Eastern- $1369
    China Southern- $1469
    Qatar-$1419
    Etihad- $1469
    Cathay- $1739

SQ- London 1859 (it has been this price all year..)

A bargain for this would be around the $1500 range.

It probably depends on your destination, but for some (e.g. Amsterdam), those are not appealing options. Stopover to Europe using Cathay (or Emirates) can be long, and China Southern can hardly be called a stopover with a travel time of around 60hrs last time I checked. Of course it depends on personal preferences, but not all airfares are equal.

60 hours?? i flew china southern in June. left sydney (roughly 10 hours), stop in ganzou (around 2 hours, wouldn't want to be there longer there was nothing there), arrived Paris (12 hours). total trip was about 24 hours, which is around average compared to previous trips i've done. plus i booked 4 weeks before i left and only paid about 1600 a ticket.

        • PER-AMS: 38hrs (was more before). Maybe they changed the routes. They are the cheapest by far, though. Worth keeping an eye on.

    • Sorry mate. Im not into the european area traveller. Its just for those who prefer to fly with SQ over a long distance flight. Theres always cheaper flights out there with smaller planes or carrier airlines.
Some of the services for the price for a specific airlines like china eastern etc are pretty much their standard price.
To make it fair it should be service vs service on an equal grounding. And ultimately personal preference.

    Hmm,

Syd > Lon 'special' fare = $1886 in early Nov, usual price $2076
Lon > Syd normal fare = £952 = $1535 for the same period
both from the Singapore Air site and inc taxes, etc.

…somehow I'm not seeing the bargain love. More a slight reduction in the level of price gouging. Even with the included high UK flight tax of $137, somehow the costs of the same flights on the same planes is 35% more (23% during 'special')

that's same thing in my mind, why australian company / website always charge more for the airline ticket. my mate in the office, always asked his family in uk to buy him the ticket over there, then he pay back later, coz the price in uk much cheaper than he bought from here.

      • The simple reason is that we can and will pay more. The UK is currently in recession (despite the official figures). The USA's middle class has been shrinking for 4 years. We're still in a mining boom and haven't had a recession since 1991, so we're expected to pay more for the same routes.
The only thing we can do is refuse to fly until prices fall.

      • Buying tickets in the Uk which start in Australia is rarely cheaper as the system jacks up the price…

I say rarely as I did get 3 business class returns BNE - BKK for just over $4000 in march, flight in April, bought from expedia.co.Uk… Nobody here could come close… In fact it was only a little more than companies here wanted for economy flights!

its not a bargain at all. singapore airline is struggling to offer any better deal compare to Etihad, Emirates these days. not sure why singapore airline thinks they are better than Emirates and Etihad.

    • because sq got more network, so they believe their brand is superior than other. but i agree with you SQ was the winner for many years until ethiad and emirates come to the games, then the games is on. but it seems they forgot to adjust their marketing campaign.

      Singapore = 5 star airline
      Emirates/Etihad = 4 star airline

      http://www.airlinequality.com/StarRanking/ranking.htm

      • sorry mate, this is a joke
they are reviewing mas for 5 stars, no way this mas to be review under 5 star in the first place
Malaysia Airlines UNDER REVIEW Malaysia Airlines
        then
hainan airlines already on the list of 5 star airlines. have been flying with them? can u compare hainan with sq? this is a biggest joke mate.

        then
China Southern Airlines on the 4 star list, another joke

if you never flying with them and trust this website, then someone must be the clown

      • The difference between 4 and 5 stars is probably not noticeable.

However, bear in mind that Emirates have 10-abreast economy class seating on their 777s, when the norm (Singapore, Etihad, etc.) is only 9.

        • thats only for 777-300 version, for 200 version they have 2-3-2
but i agree with you on sq they only got 9 seats and i can feel it is more space on 777 compare with a380

  • wait does the 'global redemption offer' simply means 50% off to members for online bookings on selected flights!?!?!?!

    • +1

That's 50% off POINTS (ie the number of points needed), not the fare.
