'09 Yaris Vs '10 Jazz

Hi guys, i've been regularly checking out the used car market for a small city car. My budget is around the 5k mark and i've found two cars in my area that have peaked my interest and thought why not ask the ozbargin community what they would buy. To give a bit more background, my wife and I have a Subaru Forester as our main car and this is going to be our run around car. I work a few days a week and study so having an additional car atm is going to make our life a lot easier.

The first is a Toyota Yaris '09, has done approx 180k and is priced at a reasonable $5500 + on road costs. My wife has previously owned a Toyota Corolla and she is very keen on owning another Toyota. I drove it and can't say it won me over however, I do think its reasonably priced and in fantastic condition.

The second is a 10' Honda Jazz, has done 115k and priced slightly higher at $5990 + on road costs. Slightly newer and less kms, i'm more keen on this than the Yaris and to me it felt nicer to drive. I've previously owned a Honda Accord Euro and absolutely loved it so again there may some bias on my part.

Only another thing to note is we have 2 small ones, but wouldn't expect them to be regular passengers although at a later date i'll probably get some extra car seats fitted so I can pick and drop them off at daycare/preschool.

Thank you for any suggestions

I vote the Jazz purely for the lower mileage. 180,000kms is a lot!

As long as all maintenance has been performed the km isn't too important

        They're both important.

We have a 2010 Jazz as our runaround car and recommend it. Ours has only done 55k.

Get the Jazz and negotiate the price down (surely you can negotiate $500 off?) Lower Km car, it’s a Honda. And it’s newer… this is a no brainer…

Honestly whos car is it going to be?

At the end of the day, if it is going to be your wifes car and she is mostly driving it, then get what she wants.

If you are mostly driving it, then get what you want.

Stop sounding so reasonable, this is the internet.

    • Exactly! Love this point. Once you get married its not as simple as this. She may drive it say once a month, thats enough to point out I made the right decision or not

      • Yeah, I get that. My last 3 cars my wife has hated to drive, or even be in. That’s ok, it’s a second car and I prefer driving mine over hers

For 5k and small car, I personally would look out for a Nissan micra Ti (4 cylinder with parking sensors and such). 2012-2016, much newer and feature packed

I've had a few Toyota Echo/Yaris. Every car purchase I ever make will probably be judged against a $5k Yaris.
They aren't the nicest or most comfortable around, but they can't be beat for reliability so you can't really go wrong.
I know a guy who didn't take his Echo to a mechanic for 10 years, still ran fine.

Can be good fun to chuck around corners too. They can feel a little slow at highway speeds, but around town they have plenty of low rev torque to feel zippy.

No experience with the Jazz, but they may well be all that and more, dunno.

Dont limit yourself to these 2 cars. Huge mistake!
Firstly by the time you get a decision here one or both could be gone.
And if they are not it could be be a hint something is wrong and not to buy.
A good, honest car at a good price will usually sell fast!
Just shortlist a couple of models you like (as you have done) and then go and inspect a few, test drive and buy the one that makes you feel the best.

Always go for low kms and best service record.
Ask for receipts too because some logbooks have been falsified.
You need receipts as proof the services was conducted.
Looks are deceiving many times with cars.
A good detail can make any old bomb look great.
Also if there are no original keys the car becomes questionable.
One owner cars are the ones to look at first since they should have original keys and service record

    Good luck

    • Honestly have been looking for a few months and have only narrowed down to these two due to the wife being sick of waiting and having to borrow the inlaws car each week.

The Jazz is a MUCH more practical car and better to drive, particularly if you go the auto. It's like a different class of vehicle. Much better quality and heaaaaps bigger space internally. For what it's worth, I think they're a better looking car too.

I had a used one from 06 that had been treated like shit, had high kms, looked like garbage and was treated as such but ran effortlessly for as long as I had it with only a yearly oil change.

    For what it is worth,neither.

    • Yep, go with option 3!

      • Which one? There are many! “Oh not a good feeling”!

I've grown fond of Suzuki Swifts. My wife is driving a 2018 GLX Turbo one at the moment while she's in-between cars and is loving it. It is a premium super-mini with adult features that feels surprisingly big on the inside. She describes it as "really chuckable". Her only gripe is that it's not a manual. In fact, she's loving it so much that she's delaying getting a new car. Despite having a budget of $70k for said new car.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yup,have to agree, great little car.On of our family members has one.Suzuki swift sport auto.Plus, they have a pretty solid reputation out there.
