Buying USB Cables off eBay

I have recently bought a Baseus MVP elbow USB c cable off ebay
the cable looks different from the current cable on the Baseus website, but since the picture is the same as the "official Baseus" account on Ebay and also Banggood etc I went ahead anyway thinking it is probably an older version. (and since I cannot find anything that looks like the Baseus website on ebay here anyway).

The cable arrived in a generic plastic sleeve without the original packaging or even a bar code from Baseus, there is a sticker bar code and model number etc but it looks like its the store's own.

I have not opened the package, should I return it or is it fine to use as it could be just repackaging from bulk buys?
I have emailed the seller about this.
The price is similar to other items and not like an extremely cheap version. I went with this seller because its based in Sydney.

edit: unified spelling of brand name

  • How much did you pay?

I wouldn't pay more than $3 for generic cables. The only reason to pay more is for MFI apple cables because Apple are bastards about it.

  • $7.95 for the Baseus USB-C cables. It is not a generic no-name brand.

    • Yes it is. They just flood the market with cheap generic products with their name on.

Pay a bit more for Anker braided cables from their official channels and they'll last you years and years.

      • Ah thank you for that.
I was under the impression that Baseus is a step up from the no-name brands (like no logo/names on cable) with a little bit more quality (maybe less than Blitzwolf for quality).

  • It helps to have consistent spelling of the brand name.

That being said, as long as you got a cable that is adequate and you were happy to pay the price, be happy.
Personally, I'd be quite happy with a $3 C to C cable that works for 60W PD.

Also note for USB C cables, there are different types/tiers. A cheap $3 cable generally won't be able to do 100W PD.

  • I found a few dodgy sellers with Baseus in the title. Product looks a little off. I would try and look at where the cable joins the connector and see if it is flimsy. You could put the cost towards getting a better legit one or one on special.

    • Cable looks okay not flimsy.
charges over 2mA (as per Ampere app).
similar to my HTC original cable.

(it is USB-A to C cable so cant do 60W PD)

  • Could be a fake.

I've accidentally bought fake Anker Powerline cables from eBay before - they were selling about 20% cheaper than the usual 'sale' price you get them online. They did fail within a year too of normal use (my other Anker cables have been working fine for years).

  • I buy all my cables from https://www.selby.com.au/
    and they have free delivery

  • Are there any reputable eBay cable sellers?
Bought from eBay because I had some small value eBay vouchers to use and I accidentally wheeled my chair across my HTC cables (some minor damage but enough to remind me that I have no spares).
